Hey Jeff,

Well after the responce we had last year we had to start planning the party... er regatta a little earlier this year. In part thanks to the turn out from you guys we hit record numbers last year, and are on pace this year to almost double the number of boats we had in 2011. What this means for the Vipers is... WE HAVE MORE FREE BEER IN DRY STORAGE.

The format is going to be the same, the late start on Saturday is sticking around, and the goal of running at least 10 races in 3 days is staying. But we have learned a few things, and are working hard to make 2012 better than ever. Including:

1) We got rid of arm bands. They are a pain, not worth the time, and a hassle.
2) We have a bigger beer sponsor, so even more free drinks post regatta
3) A number of major manofacturers and vendors are coming. Details are sketchy, but we are hoping to be able to show off some cool new toys.
4) There will be a maintenance shop on site. With an olympic boat right to repair glass work, a machinist with a 24 hour shop to repair metal bits, and a sail maker to fix holes. In addition we are working with other vendors to have on site sales of replacement equipment.

5) Bigger, better and more parties. Including an official bar in the French Quarter
6) Working on Hotel rooms in the quarter
7) Online registration, AND payment
8) Did I mention more free beer?

We did have to raise prices a bit, but if you register early, and pay online there is a $50 discount if you are paid up by Dec 1. Dropping the price to under $100 for the regatta for a Viper.

Guys we were thrilled at the turn out from the Viper fleet last year, and look forward to even more of you coming down this year. I know I have big shoes to fill taking over from Troy after last years success, but we are working hard to make sure they are filled. If you have any questions concerns, or comments let me know and we will get them resolved. Feel free to email or call me at any time.

May I suggest another minor, "tweak"

If we have 10 races, can we have at least one throw out?.  Even with the late start on Saturday (thank the lord for that), I'm pretty sure that I was still above the legal limit and seeing double.  After turning green and "chumming" between race 1 and 2, the "monkey" fared alot better than in race 1.

I mean, my god man, if you are going to expose us to the lifted skirt and perfumed thigh that is New Orleans around Mardi Gras, does it not then behoove you to find some sympathy and forgiveness for our transgressions?  (I'm just sayin'..........)

Drake,

For 2012 we already added a throwout assuming that there are more than five races completed. For exactly the reasons you identified. So let the fun begin, and plan on using a "whoops we went the wrong way ticket" for the regatta.

Shit...you guys are KILLING me ? I LOVE New Orleans. It's a paltry 5,000 mile round trip... <sigh>

I guess I better get to work on stacking three Vipers from the West on our new double (triple) and gettin' to it. :-D

Drew,

We have been in talks with a boat hauling company to give price breaks to people that are interested. Nothing solid yet, but PM me if you might be interested, we are unsure of the demand for it.

Greg,

You guys should get some boats from NOYC over to the HYC One Design regatta sept 17th and 18th.  We currently have 18 vipers registered.  There should be a bunch of J22's.. a handful of J80s' etc.

Be nice if some of you guys showed up.  Send some MGRW flyers and we'll hand them out.

Don't hesitate to contact Caj Flynn at 303-570-4325 and Karen Scholl at 319-230-9008

Both have been extremely competitive and Caj has a cabover rack that can hold a viper on topic of the truck.

Drew,

I will contact them and see if they can help at all. But the current plan is to have an 18 wheeler with a flat-bed move multiple boats at a time.  Likely with a few hubs spread throughout the country. So guys in San Diego might have to tow their boats to Los Angeles, then the trucking company would take over.

We are in the early stages of trying to work this out, but that is the plan so far. I don't want to get to far into it, or promise something we can't deliver, but this is the current plan. If we can get something worked out, and agreements in place I will make an announcement about it specifically.

Hey VIPER NATION! I know it's early, but looking at the boats registered, there are 4 VX ODs and only 3 vipers!  That didn't sit very well with me, so I made it 4-4.  This is gonna be a GREAT regatta!

Jim, nice work!! Gotta say I'm a bit jealous that you are making the long haul to represent the W Coast snakes!  I would be WAY long for us. Maybe I'll buck up and look for a charter.

I wanted to respond to some logistical concerns people raised with me privatly, so here goes.

MGRW, The Baccardi Cup, and Charlston Race Week have agreed to combine our resources to help drive down the cost of shipping boats by commercial carrier. With over 600 boat-moves for the three regattas this provides us with the leverage we need to drive shipping costs down significantly. A final carrier has yet to be selected, or contracts written, but we are getting closer.

The current system would be as follows:

Home port to New Orleans
1) Owners would contact the shipping company to arrange pick up time and location. As well as to make payment
2) Multiple owners would pack their own boats for travel, and meet a single hauling truck in a central location. With locations scattered all over the country. the intent is to keep owner's drives to less than 50 miles.
3) After being loaded the boats would find their way to New Orleans, and be delivered to an owners representative. Which will likely be a boat yard here in town for unloading.
4) Owners arrive in New Orleans, set up  their boats, race, drink, race, drink.... repeat.
5) On Sunday the owner would be responsible for pacjaging the boat for shipping again. So rig down, on a trailer, ect. Then the yard here will accept the boat for shipping.

New Orleans to Miami
6) Monday morning the boats would be reloaded, and those headed to Miami would head south. Where steps 3-5 would repeat in Miami. Those owners not headed to Miami or Charlston would have their boat loaded and transported for return delivery over the next week.

Miami to Charlston
7)Monday morning the boats would be reloaded, and those headed to Charlston would head north. Where steps 3-5 would repeat in Charlston. Those owners not headed to Charlston would have their boat loaded and transported for return delivery over the next week.

I don't want to discuss specific numbers here since things are still being worked out on the trucking end, but by sharing hauling costs like this it appears that we will be able to drive the price down significantly. Likely to the point where is could be cheaper to go this route than to haul it yourself. Since we are working on a per truck basis instead of the traditional per boat/mile basis the more boats we can stack on a flat bed the lower the price will go per boat.

As we get more specifics I will be sure to relay them.

Like.

It appears likely due to efforts by Dan and others that there will be a Miami based circuit during the winter, including Bacardi but starting in January.  As such, perhaps one "truck" could do the first leg from Miami to NOYC, and then back to Miami for Bacardi.

Olaf,

Because of the way this would work it really won't matter where the boats start from. The trucking companies we are talking with can pull boats down from Alaska to Key West without a problem. One truck might work, but hopefully we will have more boats than can fit on a single truck.

We are working on nesting issues, but it looks like three, maybe four Vipers can fit on a flatbed. At least without having to do serious prep for them. Like building custom stacked trailers, and taking the keels off. It could be done of course, but the cost and hassle seem to be a lot of work for minimal decrease in per mile cost.

Now if the Viper class wanted to look into building a custom trailer to stack as many boats as possible behind one truck that would be an interesting idea. With height restrictions, you could probably get 8-10, or figure out a way to use a modified car carrier, though how you keep the boats secured becomes an issue.

We'll be working on a big push later in the year, but thanks troy for keeping this on the radar.

Marblehead decided to schedule and promote three miami regattas, one only a few weeks before so we may loose a few boats to that (hopefully not).   Texas got really stong last year, so hoping to top the 14 we brought in 2011.

Sounds like the regatta is going to be much larger this year, but you guys have some good things planned in terms of supporting a VX / Viper sportboat line.

After two years in Miami, 55 will be headed out to the MardiGras...

I like sailing Biscayne Bay, but I won't miss the "you can park here", BUT "you have to rig over there" and "Launch Here" BUT "dock over there" and then park your trailer down the road..that's not fun.

Here's my winter/spring plan:

MGRW: Feb 23-26
Bacardi Cup Miami: March 9-12
Coral Reef Cup Miami (MAYBE in 2012, definitely in 2013): March 23-25  <--this coming together hopefully!?
Charleston Race Week: April 19-23
Wickford Regatta (RI): May 19-20
Larchmont Memorial Day Regatta & Clinic: May 26-27

There's the Miami regatta #1, which is supposed to be on Feb. 11-12, but both Miami and NO are equidistant from Boston and quite a ways apart, so I don't think Bos->Miami->NO->Miami->East Coast is going to make much sense for two more days in Miami.  I think what I'll look into is getting some sort of older/cheap tow vehicle that I'll leave with the boat and mostly fly back and forth.  If anyone wants to share and try to put together a 2 or 3-up trailer, let me know.

Just started to get the first face book posts from Jonesy about Mardi Gras. Its that time of year again.

If you are going to Mardi Gras and havent signed up for the face book group, you should. Jonesy posts are always good, especially the ones posted between 2.00 and 4.00 am.

Looking good for twenty Vipers at Mardi Gras.

58 is now taken, will be used with sails from 161 and co-skippered by myself and Jay Rhame (new Viper owner 169 from Larchmont).  TBD on whether we bring the panda spinnaker down -- may opt for the fluorescent yellow instead since it's more festive.  In any case, we're looking forward to it.

I think Furma booked at the day's inn.  It's not too far down the road, cheap and decend as i understand it.  You could stay downtown?

make sure you email me the names and mobile numbers for anyone who wants to be on the "where' it's at" mass text list.  During the event we'll be updating the facebook group and texting to make sure everyone know's where the party is.

It seems some type of Medical convention is coming to town just to watch the Animal race on Lake P. ,
they will then study the after effects of alcohol on JJ's reaction time....seems to get better imho.

They booked alot of the rooms. Take what you can get....lots of Cab rides I'm sure.

Funny you should mention that.  Animal will only kinda be racing, as is the case with the monkey as well.  It seems we had so much fun sailing together in Sarnia, that the animal/monkey hybrid will again show it's ugly head in N.O. (I aint sayin which one either).  Since I crewed for JJ in Sarnia, he agreed to crew for me in NO.  After many a brew we have come up with an even more fun little wager.  This is the plan:

I will drive every other race, as will JJ. We will tally the races and see who has the lowest cumulative score.

Exact rules are still a little fuzzy  However, we have incentivized the whole gamble.  We figured as we are racing on my Viper together and our wives are racing together on his VX, we should keep the swapping thing going.  Soooooo, if I win the intraboat regatta, I do body shots off his wife.  If he wins then it's the opposite.  I also feel that since this is win win for us boys, there ought to be some painful incentives as well.  I figure if I beat him by more than 5 points he ougt to chug a beer out of one of my shoes (should be nice and ripe by the end to the regatta).

What say you fellow Viper sailors?

PS...the wives don't know about this yet.  Probably better that way.

The monkey and "get in da' bag Arnold" ...  Two crazy fun dudes to sail with.   Mardi GRAS madness just got a bit more interesting.   There will be nowhere to hide.

What makes this wager so interesting is I'll be calling tactics when monkey is driving and vica versa.  If the bet stands as is, we may very well be dfl every race.... I aint drinking from drakes shoe..  Have you seen his feet!

Dan, somehow the guy you met in Arizona last year is going to be sitting on the rail between our gals.  Something tells me HE should have done the non stop round-trip I made this weekend to get my lovely wife's new boat.  (savannah)

Accomodations... There may be a few rooms still available at Hotel Storyville. Clean B&B that is very reasonable and walking distance to the Quarter and a straight shot down Esplanade to the Lakefront.

http://www.hotelstoryville.net/

Also - lucky for me - I am not in charge of the regatta this year and as such am making myself available to the Viper class for a big night in the French Quarter. I can guarantee that you will experience the Quarter as a local and that there will be hurling off of Viper rails the next morning.

MGRW is fast approaching, and tomorrow is the last day to get discounted prices on registration. We encourage all of our sailors to go ahead and register and pay now to take advantage of the $25 discount. Particularly since knowing how many boat will be there allows us to have a better idea of how much free beer to ask for from our sponsors!

22 vipers registered for this one - two will drop so we'll probably end up with 20 which is a 25% increase over last year.

Interesting - i think every boat that came last year is making the trip back.  That says a lot!   The weather looks fantastic.  Mid 60's with breeze.

Jim Sears with Keith M of Ullman from the west coast
Tac Boston with well, Tac Boston from Canada
Paul Zimm / Ben Pak'a from MA
David F from the south east coast
...  I think we have the US well covered.
Brad D from somewhere up there??

Should be a nice show-down.  The fleet is very evenly matched.  But the real contest happens off the water.   To recap 2011...

Two trips downtown..  an 80's cover band, pizza joint taken over by about 30 viper sailors.

What's best is that everyone kind of stuck together.    That's the plan for this year.   Perfect time to do new orleans - weekend after Fat Tuesday.

I know some i'm supposed to bring bunks for someone - and a carbon mast bracket for at least one other boat??  Work is killing me - i've already forgot so if that's you, remind me again.  viper640tx at gmail    Payment will be taken in drinks or a handle of rum to be shared at the dock.  Bring ice, cups and mixers too.

ok, see everyone in 6 days

..  except you justin

Carbon mast bracket is for me unless someone else requested it.  We can settle up in Charleston.

We are happy to announce that BeerFeast, a local New Orleans Bar has just signed on as a sponsor for MGRW. They have made the bar, and balcony on Bourbon St. available to sailors starting Mardi Gras Weekend, and continuing through the regatta. If you are coming down early swing by New Orleans Yacht Club to get your free wrist band for admittance, and half off all drinks. Beerfeast by the way is the home of, and only place I know of a eight person beer bong... Just begging for drinking contests between viper crews.

In addition Hotel Storyville is providing six kegs of free beer for competitors over the regatta, and my club manager has threatened mewith bodily harm if it isnt all drunk before the end of the regatta, so I am counting on you guys to keep me out of trouble.

By the way for those coming down for Mardi Gras, Beerfeasts balcony is over Bourbon street, so bring lots of beads.

I am not Jeff, but sign me up.

Right now the weather reports shows tempraturesin the high 60's and low 70's with 7-10kn coming from the shore... flat water, reasonable wind, warm tempratures, sunny skies, and lots of beer... you guys are going to have a miserable time.

I wanted to add, we have cleared it with the marine, all empty slips will he available free of charge for the regatta participants, though we do have an area in mind to have a snake pit, but it will involve rafting up. So skippers choice on where to park.

We are also happy to announce that Hotel Storyville has donated 6 kegs for post race libations. However my club manager promises me bodily harm if there is one left at the end of the regatta. Therefore I am counting on you guys to make sure I don't get gutted post regatta.

Wind 30+ knots made practice impossible (or at least unlikely), but socializing with other Viper sailors has been great.

Tomorrow is predicted to be 20+ knots and if you know how sailing in Lake Pontchartrain works a north wind brings big swells and chop.  Should be fun!

22 boats are signed up from across the country and at least 16 are rigged and ready to go as of this evening.

Racing starts at 11 tomorrow.  Partying never stops!  Wish you were here.

I got a ride on one of the 3 VXs that went out to have some fun.  Very steep 3-4 footers made going up-wind pretty brutal.  Full fire-hose reach was a blast!  Was about to put up kite when the rudder broke (same thing happened to one of the other boats, too).
Rescue boats would have had their hands REALLY full if we had raced today... good call RC!

Luckily it wasn't a broken rudder, just a bent rudder bracket. Thanks to our on call 24 hour machinist, we were able to get the bracket welded up, and remounted on the boat around 11 tonight. She will be out sailing in the morning with her new diomond plate rudder cartridge.

And the boats off the wind.... well our 26' fishing boat could barely keep up in the waves. We clocked the VX at 20kn with the main and jib before she had to call it.
