YRALIS Championship Regatta (Aug. 4-5, Greenwich, CT)

The YRALIS Championship Regatta is August 4-5 at Indian Harbor YC in Greenwich, CT (co-host of the 2009 Viper NAs).  8 Vipers are already signed up.  I know of at least one boat that is available for borrowing if someone wants to travel in.  Aiming to get 12-15 teams on the line.  Last year they completed 8 races in 2 days despite light winds -- short courses, fast and furious action.   

It is also the 2nd regatta out of 3 in the Western Long Island Sound Championship Circuit.  Regatta 1 was the Memorial Day Regatta at Larchmont with 16 boats.  You need to do 2 of the 3 regattas to qualify.  For the NOR, scratch sheets and to sign up online, go to http://yachtscoring.com/emenu.cfm?eID=643

This regatta is next weekend -- now up to 11 Vipers, with at least 2 more that I know of who are very likely to attend.  You do not have to be a Western Long Island Sound Viper to participate -- if you want to come in from Eastern CT, Newport, etc., the more the merrier.

9 races in 2 days -- (5 Saturday, 4 Sunday).  11 of the 13 teams who signed up were there, not bad, though it'd be more fun with a few more boats for next year.  On Saturday winds were 3-10 kts (building as the day went on mostly).  Beats were 0.75 nm, first four races were once around, finish downwind -- despite the lack of a racing douse and leeward mark rounding, plenty of passing lanes out there, using Ideal 18s and Lasers as "picks" inside the Greenwich Islands.  Final race Saturday was twice around, but was marred by a 60-degree wind shift to make for some abnormally tight spinnaker reaching and parades.  Jay Rhame, Becker Chase and Rachel Daugherty dominated the day with four firsts and a second, with Joe Healey taking the other bullet. 

Sunday's racing was much better, 3 of the 4 races were twice around, similar length course, breeze was much better, 6 kts building to 12-13 by the end of the day.  Team Vicious Panda with two crew who had never raced a Viper before found its stride by regatta's end, winning the final three races, the last one in a gybing duel over Rhame's team on Flux Capacitor to edge them at the finish and move into third overall for the series behind Healey (2nd) and Rhame (1st).  Bob McHugh gave his boat to his teenage son and his friends for the weekend, who finished a very credible fifth overall, including a 2nd in the penultimate race.
