Hi to everyone,
Registrations are now open for the Wickford Regatta. Apologies for being a little slow this year, but the website has been redone and it took longer than expected. Portions of the site are still under construction, but the entry process is up and running. The dates are May 21-22, as previously announced, and we guarantee wind both days this year!
Registration is open now, but there may be a few bugs in with the url in the NoR, so use http://wickford2011.sailspace.net/ if you have any trouble through early next week
We have set cash back incentives for all classes again this year, so please check the NOR for your classes cash back threshold. We hope to be handing out lots of the stuff at registration.
We will be offering limited housing with members once again this year. We will entertain requests only after you have completed registration, so please encourage your members to sign up soon.
See you in May,
Skip Whyte
I'm in! This was an awesome time last year. My report:
http://www.viper640.org/calendar/eventresults/252-wickford-ri-regatta-report
The word I'm also hearing is that a sizable Viper fleet might be coming together the following weekend (Mem-day) at Larchmont, so this will be the first of a great 2-fer!
See you at both.
Rattler will be at Wickford and Larchmont.
Live Wire will also be at both, can't wait. Unfortunately I will not be in Charleston.
Where can I register?

Hi New Englanders!
Let's get the scratch sheet a little longer for this one! You know you're going.
Early Adopters:
William Freeborn Greenthumb 85 Viper Portsmouth, RI Sail Newport
Olaf Bleck USA 56 56 Viper Chelsea, MA CPYC
Joseph Healey Live Wire 121 Viper Stormville, New York Noroton YC
Morgan Paxhia/Nicholas Turcotte Angry Pirate 124 Viper Newport, RI Wickford Yacht Club
See you there.
What the heck?!? I was the first one registered in the whole freakin' regatta!
Skip must have gotten grumpy about me bugging him to fix the entry fee ;-P
But it won't let me register again with the same sail number, so I guess maybe I am registered?!?
Will there be any housing available in Wickford or are there cheap motels around?
Joe
Normally I'd offer my backyard, but I have a brandy new infant here so that's out. There should be some cheap hotels though...

you're basically racing between B and E (if they stay the same after a linkage).
"B" (Budget Inn) Looks like the perfect Viper pit... 2 stars, "SHOULD BE CONDEMNED" lol
Wickford Inn actually sounds pretty nice, $75/night for 3 in a room. Official Viper Pit?
Sounds like the Wickford Inn is the place to go.
Wickford Inn also has a newport creamery (awful awfuls) and pizza place across the street. :)

More importantly, where's the bar?!?

At the YC. The party went as long as it needed last year if I recall. Free beer.
yeah, and if not there's a packy also basically across the street... lol
We're up to seven on this one! Let's get to the 12, for a $20/boat rebate. i.e. just $120 for the two days WITH dinner and beer! Now that's a deal.
Newport?
Long Island Sound boats?
This will be a great season kickoff.

We're actually at 8. In keeping with the presidential tradition established by Justin, I simply haven't paid yet. I'll get around to it today or tomorrow. :-O

So Marblehead is bringing:
Me
Dan Tucker
Paul Z (with two others, boat renamed "Angry Pirate", I'm sure someone will explain...)
Brian Barmmer (new member of Marblehead fleet)
Kay? (likely...)
Fletch?
Justin?
Barry?
others?
Rooms at the Wickford Motor Inn are $60+tax (~$68) per night. Plenty of availability at this point.
2.2 mile away.

Got 4 stars in 18 reviews. Seems like it's run by a friendly little old lady.
Okay, I'm official now, and even have 1 crew. 2 1/2 weeks in advance? WTF? :-P
I might even book a room next!

Wow, even worse than me! You do know it's only 2 weeks from this coming Saturday, right? ;)
I've scored free lodging through the regatta contact, might even have a 3rd crew already. Even went and bought my own handheld VHF finally. Gotta stop losing those damned things!

Newport, who's missing?
Long Island Sound people? Let's get another 5-10 laggards and get the New England season going!

(the ones that say pending are missing crew info. you had to pay to get to that point, so all 9 are in)
Read back into this thread for cheap hotels and more.
Okay, up to ten!
I am missing this one, got a class starting on the Monday after. Last one and I am done!

I'm planning to rig at least on Friday. Depends on when I get there.
From Skip Whyte:
Hello to all Viper sailors,
We?re only a few days away from the Wickford Regatta and I have a direct communiqu? from the ?big guy in the sky? assuring me that the rain WILL stop. Viper entries have been stuck at 10 for a while which is only 2 entries away from rebate level. The 505?s have blown past the Vipers in the turnout department, but there is still time to turn the tide.
The kegs are in the cooler, the meal fixin?s are in the fridge and we?re looking forward to great Viper racing. More of you would be better!

Congrats Joe Heally and crew for schooling us!
Thanks to Skip and all the great folks from Wickford YC for putting on some great racing and organizing, and also Chuck Allen for hooking us up with some prime marina real estate. There's nothing like a small town yacht club hosting a fine home-brew event. You guys are great!
10 Vipers were present. Light air delayed racing on Saturday after the first race was abandoned, but then someone flipped the switch and the sea breeze roared in for three races in 14-20. Sunday was a mixed bag, starting around 10-11knts and falling off, but four races went off. No messing around here--we came to sail, and sail we did. I didn't see much of the front of the fleet (except on the initial weather legs Saturday...), but I heard there was quite a battle going on.
Saturday night offered up some kegs of Sam Adams and an all-you-can-eat pasta/bbq chicken/cookies feast on the YC's patio.
Target next year: 20 boats for the New England season opener!
See you in Larchmont next week.
Great event - warm, welcoming club and first rate race management. Best part of Narragansett Bay to sail IMHO (sorry Newport). We'll be back!
Great job Joe (and Chuck Allen - the Wizard of Wickford)!
LOVED the hometown shore-side feel of this regatta. No-nonsense, no waste of time on the water, just got it done well with no BS. No hints about the quirky finish line for next year's newbies! Small rustic YC, in a beautiful secluded cove, old New England seaside town, unbelievably friendly and hospitable membership at WYC (including the folks that provided housing with breakfast, walking distance to the club). What a phenomenal weekend to kick off the NE season.
Many thanks to Skip Whyte and all the WYC volunteers, Chuck Allen for arranging the dock space next to the club, the tows from the ramp, and the beer (and for schooling us, as mentioned). Congratulations Joe, Dave and Ben.
My prediction, by 2013 or '14 this regatta will have an entry cap on Vipers.

Can I assume that reading the SIs was important? Skip is old school and is the kind who would drop a mark to keep you off the cttee boat. (Memories of 1982 Laser Worlds)

Indeed. The committee boat was a high end old-school trawler sort of thing. I met the owner at the club after everything on Sunday. The pin end was also favored every time by no coincidence.
Yea, it got pretty messy down there at the pin. Great regatta and I agreee with Dave It's better than Newport! Great bunch of people, couldn't ask for more. I'll be back next year. Thanks to my crew Chuck and Vince! learned alot from Chuck.
