Got this email from a buddy last night.  This will be run out of HYC - the location of the 2013 NA's.  Texas needs something like this to give sailing a kick in the shorts...    If you think you might make it, go register.     This could be a bang up event - charleston type party with decent logistics and no current.

   Hello Friends;
We have some exciting news. Gosling's Bermuda Rum is the title sponsor. The race is going to take place from April 25th thru April 28th, 2013. It is going to be held at the Houston Yacht club and will be the largest regatta with the biggest and best parties Texas has ever seen. The parties will have a different band each night and rum, beer and great food. It is going to be run exactly like Charleston Race Week which is hugely successful.
This is what we would like you to do. Please go to the following link:

Please register for the event. There is no commitment at this point, we are trying to gauge how many boats we will have, feel free to pass this email along. As far as the class selection at the bottom, just choose the closes one to what you race. As we progress and get our website up and running, we will send you further information. We hope to have over 200 boats the first year. We will also have a special class for offshore cruising which will be about a 25 mile race on each race day Friday/Saturday.

Thanks so much, we look forward to seeing you, and you will really be completely blown away by both the event and the parties!!!!!!

Sounds like fun. I love to see new venues copying the successful formats of both Charleston RW & HPDO.

I don't know that I'd be able to get a works boat there, maybe, will have to look at a calendar. I drove over 20k miles with a Viper in '12, so flying is appealing! I would absolutely fly in and sail.

Anyone want crew, or won't be sailing their Viper?

I am always happy to kick a Texan in the shorts.

I have been chatting to the guys from Houston a fair bit recently and I have to confess that I am really looking forward to the prospect of the Viper NAs  at Houston YC in October.  If anyone thinks this is going to be same regatta , just different location, then you are in for a very pleasant suprise. They are going to push the boat out for us.  The hospitality of HYC is going to be utterly OTT. I will let a local describe the sailing area and typical conditions but its all pretty mouthwatering. I dont mean to distract from this thread, but any advice about accomodation etc for Oct as well as April would be appreciated.

My bucket list for 2013 is going to Houston.

well guys, the more i hear about this the less excited i get (for now).

sounds like it's currently in the "pitching" stage.    the purpose of the registration list is to show support for the event.

This is something a group of us have been talking about for years.. and i hope it happens.  but for right now it's not a stone solid event.

The entry list for this event is already stronger than most other one design/race weeks in Texas.  It's great to see early support from not only the Vipers, but other classes as well.  There's plenty of boats in Texas and the surrounding areas to have a large turnout, the problem in the past has been the appropriate platform to support everyone.

I think we Texans need to pull together and make this one happen.  For the Vipers especially with a good tune up before the NAs.  The first one is always the hardest, what needs to happen?  If there's a problem getting a band to perform every evening that is the least of our worries.  I hope local politics and annual regattas with lackluster participation don't get in the way.  Personally, I'd rather see one large successful event than 5-10 mediocre ones.

I agree with Brad that the proximity to CRW could hurt even larger numbers, mainly for anyone considering from out of state.

Jeff Jones

Thanks to everyone who's signed up so far, especially the out of state boats.

Vipers remain the largest class in this "maybe" regatta.    Jboat's will be along soon i suspect.

Should we really be letting Chappers loose in New Orleans?

........I envisage search and rescue in the Quarter.

What would be perfect if MGRW came after Miami so then there is a nice procession westwards instead of zig zagging to and fro.

MGRW, will always follow Mardi Gras.  Mardi Gras follows the Catholic calendar, so it floats.  Mardi Gras will always be the Tuesday before Ash Weds or 40 days before Easter Sunday.  Which mostly puts it in Feb every once in awhile early March.  Now if the Class would like a regatta after Miami and before TX let me know I'll work it out.  Remember you can get in trouble in N.O. year round.
