Title: Miami Sailing Week 2016
Post by: Peter Beardsley on October 23, 2015, 06:10:03 PM
Viper Main Event March 10-12 as the finals of the EFG Pan American Championship, likely a pre-event March 6-7 Sunday-Monday as has been the case in future years, and I'm sure many more details to follow, but NOR and Entry are posted: http://www.yachtscoring.com/emenu.cfm?eID=1548

Viper #155 is available for charter for events this winter.  See post under "Charter Boats" for more details and some info about the boat's great race record down South.

9 boats registered so far... still early, but time to sign up if you are planning to come to the best sailing event of the winter!

EFG Winter Series - a qualifying event for the EFG Pan American Championship if you missed one of the earlier qualifiers - on March 6, 7

The famous Miami Scorch on March 8 - a fun race, a screaming spinnaker reach across to Key Biscayne where we chow-down on seafood & beer at the Boaters Grille  - and a scorch home!

Class dinner on Thursday March 10 at the Peacock Cafe (the 2015 Viper social event of the year!)

Amazing Bacardi hospitality and the wonderful welcome given to us by our host club, the Coral Reef Yacht Club not to be missed!

So with 32 boats in 2015 hopefully we will get 40 entries in 2016!

Up to 14 boats now....still early days. Time to clear your head of Christmas, get over the New Year's Eve hangover and plan your next sanity check! No better therapy than sailing on Biscayne Bay in 80+ F weather.

Miami Race Week is our class sponsor EFG's flagship event. If you haven't attended this yet it is the best week of sailing you'll have this winter. Bacardi keep us all well lubricated, and the Coral Reef Yacht club is a fantastic host.

Don't hesitate, register now!!

Ok, so I have heard of several boats that are intending to head to Miami that haven't registered.... Please register!! We're planning a great week. The warm waters of Biscayne Bay are just what the north-east sailors will need after the snow storm headed your way....

A note from our friend Mark Pincus in Miami looking for a Viper to charter during Bacardi Miami Sailing Week March 10-12.

BACARDI MSW is looking for a charter boat?

EFG Winter Cup - Day 1 - Irish Eyes Are Shining

Sure, St. Pat's is a week away, but Royal Cork Yacht Club's Anthony O'Leary was certainly smiling today as he sailed back into the US Sailing Center Miami after having scored bullets in both the the races today.  With breezes in the high teens from the north, Biscayne Bay was the venue for 16 Viper 640 Sport Boats.  This final qualifier series for next week's EFG Pan-Am Championship to be sailed as part of Bacardi Miami Sailing Seek.

O'Leary, sailing with his son Robert and Tom Durcan found ways to work past the leaders down wind and take both races. Just behind O'Leary is Noroton YC's Joe Healy, Ryan Zupon, and Patrick Aylward with two seconds. Nick Amendola from Naples, FL stands in third.

Four races are scheduled for tomorrow. Perfect "Chamber of Commerce" sailing on Biscayne Bay.

The real question is who won the Scorch??

The Scorch was "modified" because it was blowing in the low 20s on the nose. Why get there cold and wet? We hoisted Alpha over November and all drove.

Great seeing everyone again.  The Viper fleet has come a long way!  I started out in the back, and am still there, but the boats that were in the front are back there with me.  We don't get many opportunities to race the boat one design, and it shows when we get in a big fleet.

One thing, let's figure a way to have people stop hitting each other.  Hogs got hit about 10 times on the first day, Grey Matter took a prod up the backside and the leward gate roundings looked like an orgy.

Thanks to everyone, specially Buttons, for all the hard work to make this a great regatta.

Sorry i could not make it, but i agree with the contact in the fleet. Im new to the fleet and managed to sailed in 2015 NA's which was a fantastic event. I have been racing for over 30 years and i think we had more contact in 4 days then I've had over my entire sailing career.

Hey now...This was my best Miami Race Week in five years as I only hit one boat the entire week.  Usually Miami is a target rich environment for my bow.

I had a great time in Miami.  Thanks to all who put it together.  One point that may have been missing, which is popular on the west coast, is the informal debriefs by the daily leaders.  I'd love to hear how Crispin set his boat up for the conditions in Miami and likewise to Moore, who had a perfect second day.  I think these debriefs bring the class closer in competition and in at a very basic level, get us to interact off the water.  When you know your fellow competitor's name, you're less likely to stretch a mark zone or try to cut the line at haul out.  This makes a tighter community.

I had a blast and look forward to my next trip east.  We have a great class and need to continue this momentum!

Hey Jeff,
We generally have debriefs except at the Bacardi cup as it is logistically difficult! It has been tried a bunch but the success rate in Miami is low.
I agree that it is nice to see people off the water so we all meet and get to know everyone better. The one thing Miami does is give us great sailing conditions just like it did last week! One week of fantastic sailing..
