The Larchmont Yacht Club Viper fleet will begin its first season with a two day regatta on Memorial Day weekend, 5/28 & 29 and we are welcoming all East Coast Vipers to attend.  This regatta has no entry fee.  There are multiple hoists available and there will be a Saturday evening BBQ for Viper crews, compliments of the LYC Viper fleet.  First warning isn't until 2:30 pm on Saturday so you can drive down Saturday morning.  If we're given enough notice, we may be able to put some teams up, and there may be some crewing opportunities too with some of the new Larchmont owners who may be sailing their boats for the first time.

We have already heard that there will be a strong contingent from Marblehead and the list of CT boats has is growing.  Current scratch sheet below.  The link below gives detail and includes an entry form that is required.  We are expecting around 15 boats, based on what we know now.  Please let me know if you can attend, so I can keep the list updated.   It is a multi-class event, Vipers have the first start and the RC generally does not wait for other classes to finish when rolling off another start, so there should be a bunch of races.

If you're planning to attend, contact LYC fleet captain Peter Bauer for details at [email protected]

Now up to 14 boats - not bad for a local regatta -- a sign of things to come in Long Island Sound.

 D&S's did it for Mark.

+ Mark McNamara on "No Clew" = FOURTEEN BOATS.

Not bad for a last minute local regatta. Of course "NO ENTRY FEE" incl barbeque might have something to do with it. Offer free food, free beer and free dark and stormies to Viperers and they flock like vultures.

Did someone mention the Dark and Stormies to Soley? I'm suprised he's not all over this.

What time do the races start each day? I checked out the link and I just got confused, it doesn't take much!

Peter Beardsley

Taking a look at the link, it's pretty easy to see how that could happen.  Here's the story:

This is part of the local YRA racing -- the Memorial Day Regatta is the first event of the season for that group.  The Larchmont Vipers will be racing with them quasi regularly, and were given a start at this event.  It's a multi-class regatta, several other classes may attend (Etchells, Shields, IODs, S- Boats, 5o5s, Windmills), and if turnout is low for them (4 or fewer boats per class), starts may be combined.  None of this will affect the Vipers, since we are the first start based on speed, and there is a separate start/finish line -- and the RC has zero qualms about starting one class while another is finishing, nor will they wait for all classes to finish before starting another race.

First warning is 1425.  Very civilized -- the late start time is because "that's what time we start races at Larchmont" for one designs.  The breeze is a lot better in the afternoon (generally), and the RC will likely go until 5 or 5:30pm each day (unlikely though for a race to start after 4:15 pm).  Courses tend to be windward-leeward, 2 laps (4 legs), and I'd guess that we'll do 2-3 races per day, maybe more if conditions allow -- they will crank them out as fast as they can.

Also, there is a rumor that we may have a 16th boat soon, which would be excellent news -- waiting for confirmation.

Thanks for spelling it out for me! Would it be the same start time on Sunday too?

Peter Beardsley

Same time on Sunday as well.  People can go out earlier and practice if they want -- no restrictions there.  Tac Boston will be in town for the regatta racing on 161 with us, and may do some rigging/tuning talks in the mornings with other veteran Viperers for us Viper newbies at Larchmont, which I'm sure others would be welcome to tag along too.
