Over 4 weeks away and already the largest viper regatta in texas history - thanks to the influx of boats to Houston. Could possibly be up to 15 boats entered pretty soon - all from Texas.
Signs of things to come, and consistant large fleets.

I predict a rum storm, with an 100% chance of beer.
This one to be followed two weeks later in Smogtown with another Viper fleet, Oct 2/3. JJ's promising us all free mast-up storage for travelers. Who's in?
Jeff,
Are thee any boats available to Charter?
Brad
brad, if you want to come down and sail i'll bust my tail and get 31 ready for you.
But unless you bring my new Doyle's, you'll have to use the Hydes i have with the boat;-) Would need to know very soon. It would super cool to have you down again.
When is best to call you?
I want to sail.
Brad
whenever man, call me
14 vipers registered right now, another three on their way shortly. 17 seems like the magic number, but could be a straggler in the mix.
Sounds like a cool regatta. Might have to find out if everything is really "bigger" in Texas.
Let's limit that to your hangover eric.
It's official - the Texas Viper 640 Class is adopting the GBCA BBVA Compass Regatta in Galveston Bay as a circuit stop on their 2011 schedule. Due to a lack of H20 at Lake Travis, the Bank Regatta will replace the Govenor's Cup on the schedule. This is great news!! Viper sailors - leave your boats at HYC (mast up) after the one-design regatta on 9/18 and 9/19 and come back in 2 weeks for the circuit stop. GBCA is excited to have you!!! (oh, and I promise that the party will definintely meet Viper standards)
Everything you need to know about the next 2 Viper events in Galveston Bay -- The HYC One Design Regatta this weekend, expecting 100 boats and the GBCA BBVA Compass Bank Regatta just 2 weeks later!

Is that a threat or a promise?
Oh, it's a threat.
Team jackpot has arrived in Houston. Good to be back in the mother land.
Too bad the boat you are using is still in Austin being held captive........................................fear the Monkey!!!!!!!!!!!
That's ok Drake, we found the bar last night and will be just fine....
Big thanks out to HYC,Jeff Jones,Lynn's for getting us to come down here for the regatta. We had a blast...
Brad,lee,Eric.
Big fun this weekend. 19 boats registered for this regatta - that texas boats less one that is being upgraded (Othewise he would have been there).
Thank to everyone for showing up, it was a fantastic time.
phenomenal regatta. Great conditions, great competition, great friends.........maybe too much rum!
The monkey may not be feared too much, but we were there in the mix!!
Unfortunately, mother nature came through with a tough squall line this morning and spanked my monkey!!

Really sorry about that Drake, sounds like just a few minor scratches.
Jaun's mast is broken. Several other vipers blow off their trailers.
Lesson learned - tie'em down boys.
WOW!! MAJOR BUMMER =(
The trailers are pretty light also, if the boat was strapped down, would the trailer stop this from happening??
I remember the Tornado Worlds @ Houston in '90 I think it was... a hurricane was coming through, so everybody turned the boats upside down and tied them concrete parking bumpers.
Ultimately boats were still lifted and the concrete bumpers worked as swinging clubs through the boatyard, and did the major damage...
Aircraft style screw in the ground anchors should work well.
Dropping the rig also.

I always knew Drake and others can blow me away sailing but I did not expect them to take it this far. Cirrus Skies (#96) - parked between two boats that flew - was saved by a 3" strap to the trailer just forward of the mast. The boat cover made by sailmaker/Viper sailor John Bartlett also held without damage and may have helped deflect the wind.
I'm not sure what would have happened if the winds had been stronger or longer. According to the Harbor Master, the wind speed climbed quickly from near 0 to around 35 mph and sustained gusts for over 15 minutes. Graphs for today's weather event at Houston Yacht Club today

No problem - we're glad that you made the boat look good and sail fast. With your black sails, should I think about renaming the boat the "Black Pearl" - except without cannonball holes in the sails as in Pirates of the Caribbean? (See Cirrus Skies with Sea Monkey in Drake's photo above.)
And thank you and Jeff for not mentioning that - in addition to having my boat strapped down tight to survive winds - I am also the one who had my boat rigged so tight in 108 degree heat this summer that I warped the deck fiberglass. Darn....
You mean you got what's left of my boat up to Sarnia. Geeze, i'm willing to bet it was was shuck's wild driving that blew my tire and broke my trailer ;-)
Cant wait!!!! BTW Brad, my 3rd had to bail. Trying to drag monkey boy up with us, will know today if we need a 3rd.

Great regatta, great competition....the level of the fleet is definitely improving. Thanks Brad, Lee, Eric for coming down and showing us Texans a thing or two about sailing these boats. Hopefully the monkey will be feared more often.
Sorry to hear about the monkey.
Thanks to the Lynn's, Jones, Drake, and the whole Texas fleet for the incredible hospitality. They have an awesome group of viper people in Texas and Houston is a perfect venue for the one and only viper 640. Hope we get to come back soon.
All three boats that were blown off their trailers are OK. None were strapped down - only had bow lines - so let that be a lesson to everyone. Of the three boats - 115 has a scrape or two and nothing critical, 101 has a couple holes and scrapes, but is being repaired as we speak and 107 has a broken mast and a few minor fiberglass repairs. All should be ready to race in our next circuit regatta on 10/1 - 10/2.
It is interesting how the boats fell off the trailers, but did not damage the keels, keel trunks or hulls. Most of the stress was on the exterior edge of the deck which is surprisingly strong.
The Texas Fleet is ready to roll!
P.S. Strap down your boats to the trailer and you are much better off.
Brad
#134 - Catapult
Houston, Tx
Watching the news report it looked like there had to be major damage to the keel/keelbox. Very fortunate.
So glad all the boats are okay and will be ready to race in the Bank Regatta! For all of you not sailing at Sarnia, we already have 8 boats signed up for 10/1 and 10/2 in Houston. Come play.
Here's a link to all things Bank Regatta.

Great to hear that all boats are ok! Lynn and I (along with Eric and Amanda Vance) will be at BBVA this weekend! So one of us will be available to help while three race.
Lynne, does the one who is not racing want to help with Race Committee on Saturday? Can you email me if you're interested? jody0221 at yahoo dot com
Texas boys are doing well in sarnia at the NA's...
