Title: Cork - Aug 16, 17, 18 (Kingston, Ontario Canada)
Post by: Darren Gilbert on July 03, 2014, 10:55:19 AM
The Great Lakes Viper fleet is heading back to Kingston to sail the CORK OCR (Olympic Classes Regatta) and also piggyback our Canadian Championship & Great Lakes Championship August 16, 17, 18 (Saturday - Monday).  This is also the Canadian Qualifier for the Pan American Championship.

We had 11 boats on the line last year, and already 8 registered for this year's event.  It would be great to reach our goal of 20 boats this year.  We would really like to make this event to be the 'Mid Summer HPDO'.

If you have never sailed CORK before, well all I can say is you're missing out.  If you have, then I'm sure you'll want to come back for this year's event.

Kingston is a fantastic place to sail in August.  The breeze is typically ON with daily thermals kicking in.  The facilities at Portsmouth Olympic Harbour are also great.  Fresh water sailing, tons of space for staging, multiple ramps, and hoists are available.  Not to mention the fact that CORK has been running since 1969 so I'm sure they know a thing or two about hosting a regatta.  The harbour also sits against the exterior wall to the old Kingston Penitentiary which is...unique.  There are inexpensive places to stay, camping, hotels, university residence, etc.

Nightlife and entertainment in Kingston is fun.  There are a ton of bars and restaurants close by.  Given that it's a town built around 1) the University, 2) the Penitentiary, and 3) the Canadian Forces base, I'm sure anyone can find a place to kick back after a day on the water and have a few cold ones.  Steve Chapman is organizing a Viper Dinner for Saturday night.  Last year this was a fantastic event with Doug Hennessy breaking out his harmonica for a solo performance.

WLIS and other east coast boats, we would love to have you come for the regatta.  Ask Peter, Jay, and Rachel if they had a good time last year (it didn't hurt that they left with the trophy).  I think they will tell you just how awesome a place Kingston is to sail.  They can also discuss what is needed to get your boat across the boarder.

If you have any questions, or if there is anything I can do to help please don't hesitate to either post here or contact me directly.

See you in Kingston!
Darren

On a side note, we have access to a charter boat if anyone is interested?

CORK is fantastic, and is still one of my personal top 3, if not top sailing venues in North America.  I have never had a bad time in CORK, and the Great Lakes Viper fleet would never allow that to happen anyhow.  The only reason I'm not going in 2014 is because we're putting Ghost Panda on a multi-boat trailer 5 days later to go to Long Beach, but Jay may take his boat up, TBD.  Getting your boat to Kingston is easy - just bring passports and be sober when you cross the border -- doesn't hurt to have boat title docs and insurance docs with you just in case, but no one asked for them.  Getting back to the U.S. post regatta is even easier if you have CORK medals around your neck, and sobriety at that point is overrated if you are sufficiently charming.

9 boats registered - we need a few more to join us for the fun in Kingston.

Great sailing - should be a fantastic regatta.

Superb pubs and great microbrewery beer to be had...

Just a quick reminder to everyone that payment for CORK is due 'On or Before July 31st' or the late registration fee kicks in.

We currently have 9 boats registered and I've had a lot of other's interested.  This could easily be a 15+ boat event.

Come on Marblehead and WLIS boats.  We want to see you there!

12 boats now. Mark Engelhardt and I are taking his boat, USA 42 Mojito! This will the the third travel event for our Lake Champlain crew this summer! Hopefully next year we'll get both of our boats on the road for some of these events.

This one is a little expensive it seems.

Cheers,

jason

Thank you to everyone who attended, very fun and extremely close racing over the past few days. Just the way it should be.
