Okay.
Got your boat packed?
Vipers are launching from US Sailing Center. Rig and Launch on Day One. Hoist and De rig. Leave trailers at the center. The cost for rigging, storage and launching is $25/day. It goes to a good cause.
Each Viper then has a slip at CRYC. NOT BBYC. CRYC has the tiki bar and Mark Pincus who is sailing a Viper is Regatta Chair is member of CRYC.
Thursday night, after the Bacardi Tent, The Vipers are going on for dinner to the restaurant "Calamari" which is next to the Taurus bar. All Vipers welcome. Call ahead and book a table and say that you are with the "Viper Party. I have invited Eddie (Snr Bacardi) !
Mark tells us that this is a great restaurant and he knows management.
Anyone who partied with the Vipers when we met Eddie in Newport knows that Eddie understands Cuban hospitality. Some Viper sailors were denied entrance to the restaurant (combination of dress code and balance problems)until Eddie swept all objections aside announcing "These are my good friends" and then the Bacardi really started to flow in earnest.
We also have a few awards to hand out.
Brad and any Jackpot alumnae are also absolutely invited.
So we only have to pay the US sailing centre $50 for the whole regatta??
Checked out the Calamari restaurant in CG, looks good, even a decent non sea poo menu for real meat eaters.
Screw the Jackpot aluni, they are too pussy to make the trip to SoFlo.

Its $25 per day for use of hoist and storage. But once you are in, you are at CRYC.
So no fee for storing trailers at USSC?
Thanks for the info and organization. Is there already assainged slips at CRYC for the Vipers or might we have to contact CRYC for that? Really looking forward to this event.
I will be there with my rum on......
I will be there to drink Brad's rum.
Oh wait, I owe him a bottle...
Who you sailing with Brad??
Here is the program.

Nice write up of three of our teams.
I interviewed Matt for the article as well, but it didn't make it past the censor. I will publish it on the class website instead.
This year, I'm going to try and get me one of those sought after "Glyn Locke skulls" .......sounds like something for the mantelpiece!

JUst got off the phone with USSC. Here is a quick update.
USSC was thinking of $25 per day over the course of the regatta which would include trailer storage. So Weds- Sat would be $100.
But both USSC and I want this to be a hospitable experience for the Viper fleet.
Although Biscayne Bay is an awesome , really awesome, place to sail ....the Bacardi has stumbled because the Vipers have never really had a home base at this regatta. USSC wants to be our home base.
Soooooo, they have offered a $75 Regatta deal includes launch, hoist, storage from Weds to Saturday.
Casa "Mambo Kings" is 3615 Plaza Street in Coconut Grove.
My cell # is 781-888-6336
PLEASE CALL Calamari for Thursday evening and say "Viper Party" so I get an idea for numbers.
Team Last Call would like to join the party!
Count 3 in!
Weather looks a little unsettled for later in the week. One thing I guarantee is that it will be considerably warmer than Mardis Gras regatta. Ha Ha!
Check out Thursday, Friday Saturday for North corner of Biscayne Bay:

Sunny and Partly Sunny

Mojito Temperature 33
Why would I want to leave the Connecticut winter for this?
Oh I don't know matt, I was comfortably numb for most of the weekend.
Have one for all us po' viper sailors who had to settle for the big easy. Btw, you seem to have a lot of disposable income for an unemployed dude ;-)
Have fun, stay out of jail or away from mechanical bulls.

2012 MELGES ROCKS THE GROVE PARTY!

Friday, March 9, 2012 • 8:00 p.m. - 10.30 p.m.
MR. MOE'S RESTAURANT & BAR
3131 Commodore Plaza, Coconut Grove, Fla. USA
(305) 442-1114
Shame not to drink their beer.
Seriously, we have many friends sailing in both fleets and good to hang out with fellow sportboat afficianados.
So
Weds: EFG Cocktail party at tent
Thursday Viper dinner at Calamaris
Friday Melges party at Mr Moe's
I will rely on Matt and Dan to organize trips to Mangos afterwards. Please take Chapman with you!
ALERT.
US Sailing Center has confirmed a special "welcome" offer to Viper sailors
$75 for Weds to Sat.
This means you can launch, hoist and store your trailers over the regatta.
Its a GREAT DEAL and a fraction of what the other fleets are paying at Shake A Leg.
(Its also less than what J80s are paying at USSC).
Please remember to find Pat Downey and say "thank You" on behalf of the Viper fleet.
We are building a good relationship here and we are talking to them about hosting a Viper regatta out of USSC for $150 including dinner in 2013!
Awesome conditions.
Three races. Sleigh rides downwind.
Tips from Brad and Justin for folks coming next year:
1. Find a place to stay in the Grove - its where its at.
2. In the Easterlies, when the Sun comes out, there is a tendency for breeze to veer right a bit.
3. Sand Bar has penny drafts if you are buying for ladies or say you are buying for ladies
4. See # 3 above, its important.
5. Pudding wrestling is safer than bull riding. Maybe. Don't ask.
6. This is come of the most incredible Viper sailing in the planet.
7. Get a guest card from CRYC so you can buy drinks at the Tiki bar when you step off the boat.
Gotta Go.
After Bacardi tent.......Vipers at Calamaris for 7.30 pm.
I have a table for 40.
Some of the J80s might comes as well.

Tip # 8. Don't mess with Sam and the Last Call.
If you want to do something dangerous, go ride a mechanical bull.
Pudding is pretty incredible.....night before, amateur poll dancing!
Wish I was sailing a Viper here.....
good wind, good weather, good rum, good fleet, good fun...
Got home last night.
Great week.
Logistics sorted. Thanks to USSC for hosting launch/haul of Vipers + easy parking. Thanks to CRYC for docking and guest cards at the bar.
I can sum up the weekend as some great racing among good friends.
All over the race course, upwind tactics and downwind jibing duels, it was boat on boat against friends and lots of close competition and good laughs.
" Hold on here, we're crossing Phil, lets tack on his hip"
" Here comes the Last Call, oh man, looking really good out of the left"
" We gybe when Joe gybes, ......Ben knows it, Zimm knows it, Here we go on three"
"Christ look at that chute, what the... has Double D tied the clew to the tack????"
First Race of last day - " Craig, dont piss off Deborah!"
and so on.
Last 200 yards of the last run of the last race of the last day summed up the regatta for us. Three boats downwind, in a line, lying in 2nd 3rd and 4th for the regatta overall. Beautiful breeze, blue water and three boats that have been within points of each other for the whole regatta are separated by half a boat length going into the final finish and.........we commence a gybing duel. Mambo on left gybes to starboard forcing Aresthusa onto stbd, Last Call hardens up sharply to take both sterns by a hairs width. Mambo gybes back, Last call gybes to stbd, Mambo gybes....hit layline, both gybe, Last Call comes out of gybe with the jump.....but wait here's Phil on Aresthusa again, bow out on both .
Never mind the final results. In the final 200 yards of the final race, boat on boat, Aresthusa beat the Call beat the Mambo Kings.....by inches.....and that gentleman and ladies is sailboat racing!
Personal thanks to Dave Nickerson from 3 Grins and to Mambo Kings regular, Pete Largess for sharing an epic road trip and some great sailing with me.
It was great seeing everyone after racing each night. Looks like everyone had a great time as conditions were Miami perfect.....See you all in Charleston!

Lee and Sam,
I understand that you need to explain "The Madness". An old friend of y'all has told me to watch out for the onset of "The Madness".
Rum drinks on the first downwind leg have proved to be fast in the past, the problem is on the second we end up gybing out early on layline for the liquor store!! Justin, I am pretty sure the Madness happened Sat night at the Sand bar! Great time thanks all, see you in Charleston.
Looks like another fantastic day of sailing in Miami.
Have a question about your rigging cause I'm helping to setup #117 in preparation for Charleston next month. Are we now allowed to have tapered sheets? And is this mainsheet setup class legal? It looks simple and clean and appears to have enough purchase. This would be much simpler than rigging up a new split-tail mainsheet.
Who do you know that knows about the Madness?????? Small world. There was some madness Saturday night! Mad Dog and the Bull were loose!
Yes, fear the Madness!
Tom - The Last Call boys seemed to have had a problem finding the class rules - it's been straightend out. We had a good discussion on Friday night at the tent with rum in hand. On Saturday, the tapered sheets were gone, they changed their mainsheet set up (Sam said he liked how the mid bridle makes it easier to pull yourself across and up in tacks), and are registering their sails. No worries here.
Tom - Did you guy #117 from Ron or are you crewing for him?
I'm crewing on Ron's boat this year again for local stuff and maybe a few out of town events. Our third for Charleston is one of the new owners of #116. He is looking forward to seeing what a Viper event is really all about before he bring his boat out to play.
Can't wait to get to Charleston. Haven't been sailing since December so am ithching to get back on the water. Although, we may be abel to sail here before heading south. We are in the midst of a heat wave...not sure if that's an accurate description, but when we are seeing highs of 16 degC when the normal highs are +2 degC, it seems appropriate.
That's great Tom. I look forward to meeting you and the guys from 116. I spent a couple of summers (2008-2009) up in Ottawa sailing out of Nepean so we probably have already met.
I'd really like to get Ron and the guys from 116 to come down and race the Bayview One Design and Sarnia One Design Regatta. We've got 7-8 boats committed for both events and would really like to hit that magic number of 10 boats registered to start attracting attention from the east coast guys. I'll be talking to them about at CRW!

Last Call went street legal and changed sheets for Miami.
AFAIK, Tapered sheets are still not allowed.
After sailing? Not so legal.....Last Call seem more comfortable in an "off road" enviroment.
