There is a thread about how to get to Long Beach.. Go here first.. :)
http://www.abyc.org/event.cfm?id=538
I am signed up, and we have our 4-boat trailer from Larchmont reserved to head west already. Expect a couple of other Larchmont entries shortly.
Larchmont entries now equal the number of SoCal entries. This is your big chance West Coast -- I'm sure lots of people will be signing up in the next couple of weeks, and we'll get word out in the next newsletter and on the Facebook page right now.
Get your entries in soon. Sail raffle open to the first 25 entries.. :)
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Entries now up to 20 in first 4 weeks..
There are a few spots left on the sail raffle for the first payed 25..
Working on more housing options..
http://www.abyc.org/upload/2014_Viper_NA_Housing.pdf
There may even be a charter boat availible.. stand by for updates.. ;)
24 teams signed up already. The first 4-boat Viper trailer is fully booked to go to Long Beach for the NAs Sept. 3-6. There's been some talk about a second trailer, how much it would cost per boat, etc. We were able to get a second driver to agree to the same rate that we got on the first 4-boat trailer, and can do another 4-6 Vipers for $3500/boat round trip from the NYC area to Long Beach and back. If that sounds like a lot, if you were to do the drive yourself, it's at least $1200 in gas, not counting food and lodging along the way, plus at least 5700 towing miles on your car and trailer and the wear-and-tear that goes with that, plus at least 6 days of driving if you had multiple drivers going straight through, and probably more like 8-10 days of driving round trip with 2 or fewer drivers.
If you're interested in being on the second truck, please let me know -- spots may go quickly and there are already a few people interested. These events take planning, and we'd have to book the truck early to ensure that we have space, and other people want to book flights, housing, etc.
Great deal on the trailer. It was $,1200 in fuel EACH WAY to Marblehead from here in 2012.
Did it in 3 days though, NON STOP!
2 spots on the second trailer taken already.
Wow, impressive! 3 trailers? Peter and crew are going to set a new precedence for now and years going forward...no excuses for not getting yourself there. I guess we better start planning for 2015 Larchmont.
Corporate sponsor to advertise on the trailers as they bomb across the country to the promise land?
Don't know if we'll get to 3 trailers -- 2 large trailers is a good start and we'll see what happens from there. On the sponsorship end, if there was a company that wanted to defray transport costs by having a rolling advertisement go 5700+ miles round trip with its name, logo or other message, we'd be willing to talk to them if someone had a good contact, but it's not something we've explored to date.
Now up to 28 entries for NAs, glad to see a few more west coast teams signing up. The way to get more east coast teams is to get more west coast teams. Of course, if the Aussies were able to get their 4-boat container together, that would be really motivating for everyone.
What Timbo would probably really want right now apart from more entries is someone with a good connection with a beer distributor to have free kegs at NAs. Viper sailors are thirsty and fairly loyal if there's anyone out there who wants to donate 10-12 kegs or so...
10-12 barrels would be massive consumption.. :P
Now @ 31 entries and 4 months to go. 21 paid, so there are still 4 spots open to pay and get
Your hat in the Jib raffle.
Sun, sand, breeze, booze, sunsets, breeze, booze
What's not to like? :P
We at Rondar have expended a ridiculous amount of time and effort on researching cross-country Viper transportation options. $3500 round trip is a SCREAMING good deal. We normally pay about that much for a two-boat trailer going one way, FYI.
Speaking of two-boat trailers, we have two double trailer kits available for rent or purchase. Can be shipped on a pallet via motor freight very affordably to anywhere in the US to help get you there. We've proven their effectiveness and durability on multiple cross-country deliveries. Requires two 2nd generation (current) Rondar trailers. Email me for details if you're interested.
4 paid spots still open on the jib raffle. 33 entries so far, 4 months to go.
3 slots still open for a jib.. who feels lucky?
Jib Raffle is now closed, Great job everybody.. 36 entrants so far, and I know there is still a lot of folks who have not thrown in their hat yet..
Lot's of other reasons to get here, more sails, covers, rum, sun, breeze, new officers elected @ the AGM, new rules.. ;)
"California is the place you want to be, so get on out to ABYC"
NA's are going to be fantastic this year. Long Beach is one of the best venues in North America to race a Viper and everyone is going to have a great time. Congrats to Tim on getting 36 entries when the event is still 4 months away.
40 entries now for Viper NAs, and only one more spot left on the second 4-boat trailer leaving from the east coast. If you want that final spot, drop me a line ASAP and sign up for the regatta.
I think we might have a "drug induced" post :)
Kevin are you sure that is the right link? I was all jacked to see some sailing!
It may be the right post, but it may also only be viewable to friends of the person who posted it. I can't see it either, would be great if it was up on YouTube.
Up to 44 entries and only 57 days til show time....just in case everyone else isn't crossing off the countdown calendar.

I am not sure of everyone's housing status, but I think there are a few room left at the Ayres and the Queen Mary on this discounted rate, but you need to move fast.

Im struggling to find the regatta website page. I found it before a couple of times and I know it is a bit of a hunt. At this stage, can we have the link front and center of the home page?

The 2014 NA's Pre/Practice event is the Alamitos Bay Labor Day Regatta. If you are in town by the end of August, please come sail the event. It will be held on one of the NA circles and is the second largest event of the year for the club. There are 12 Vipers entered so far, here is the entry link:

How do we update our registration with crew info and ISAF ID's?
Steve Chapman

Steve,
I think the current plan is:
1. Make sure all of your crew have current ISAF classification that can be easily searched on the ISAF website in the "Sailors" section
2. At registration, write the ISAF numbers on a form that will be at the table.
3. The RC / Class will then confirm based on the info provided which teams are eligible for the Corinthians Trophy.
I don't think there's a clean way to do this through the regatta registration website currently.
What Peter said...
Event Preview Press Release:
LONG BEACH, CA (September 1) For the first time in the Viper 640 Class's history, the North American championship will be contested on the west coast. Hosted by Alamitos Bay Yacht Club, the 2014 NAs will feature 40 boats with teams from seven states, as well as three Canadian and two Australian teams. "We're thrilled to bring the North Americans to a very deserving venue" said Class President Peter Beardsley. "Long Beach is a fantastic place to sail, and the Southern California Viper fleet has become one of the largest in the country."
Event chairman Tim Carter, who also serves as the local fleet captain and is one of the biggest reasons behind the success of the class locally, has queued up four days of post race parties and classic California fare for the visitors. "I just want the damn thing to be done at this point, and if there isn't wind, I won't be able to look Beardsley in the eye afterward" said Carter. Thankfully, the forecast is on Carter's side, as the sea breeze has returned to Long Beach after early signs of an El Nino year kept the event chair on pins and needles throughout the summer.
In late June, ABYC played host to the Class's Pacific Coast Championship as part of Long Beach Race Week, and the 22-boat Viper 640 class, the largest at LBRW, was won by locals Kevin Taugher, Chuck Tripp and Mike Pentecost. After placing sixth at the 2013 North Americans in Houston, the team aboard Taugher's Hot Mess will be considered one of the favorites in Long Beach. However, they'll have to battle with 3-time North American champion and Canadian Olympian Brad Boston and his experienced team aboard Jackpot from Sarnia, Ontario, as well as two-time champion Justin Scott from Greenwich, Connecticut, both of whom traveled great distance for fun in the sun. Class Technical Committee member Rod Berteaux is traveling from Western Australia, and will also be a serious contender, having placed fourth at the 2012 North American championship and fourth at the 2014 EFG Bank Pan American Viper Championship. Local Jay Golison placed third at the 2013 North American championship and second at the 2014 Pacific Coast Champs, and is also likely to be in the mix.
Racing kicks off with an unofficial "Pre-North Americans" at ABYC's annual Labor Day Regatta Saturday and Sunday, with registration and the Class's Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, September 2, followed by four days of racing in the waters off Long Beach. To follow the racing and for daily results, please go to the event website at http://www.abyc.org/event.cfm?id=538
The 2014 Viper North American Championship is possible due thanks to the support of sponsors EFG Bank, Ullman Sails, Doyle Boston Sails, North Sails, Quantum Sail Design Group, – SoCal, Goslings, Belmont Brewing Company, Rondar Raceboats USA, Sailing Pro Shop, and Rooster.
Day 1 is in the books. Recap: http://www.viper640.org/component/content/article/14-news/460-jeff-grange-takes-control-of-viper-640-north-americans-after-first-day
Where are the scores? Nothing is on the webpage.
I would tell you where to find the scores online if the east coast score line looked a bit better.
The left coast boys and girls are crushing it out there. What other news can I bring you?
The wild hogs are going really wild and littering the ocean with crew members.
The boat formerly known as Argo is now called "Hello Kitty"
Our new class administrator turns out to be a very fine Tenor.
East coast Australians become totally indecipherable after a dozen dark and stormies.
West coast Australians sail with 32 on the cap shrouds and tight lowers in Light air......and win.
Come to think of it......why are there so many bloody Australians at this regatta?
The Australian sport boat championships are in January in Sidney and " yoush are all iniviteshitted" .....at least I think that is what he said.
Bermuda announced they are hosting the 2016 North Americans and subsequently moved into a trade account surplus around 11 pm last night on the strength of Gosling exports.
The group sponsored by Goslings that was sitting around the fire pit stayed there way after the club was closed. Timbo found that his bag and keys were locked in the pavilion. No problem because Beardsley offered him a place to stay......until the Pandas and the Mambo Kings discovered that the main club house was also locked with their keys inside. It turns out that Rachel Beardsley and Jessie Kirkland have unlikely burglar skills and broke into the pavilion and rescued Tim's keys. The main club house resisted their skills. (where are the Detroit homeboys from Jackpot when you need them) . Ched proctor was narrowly dissuaded from bunking up in at Etchells in the dry sailing area. Sunrise looked down on an ugly scene but somehow most found their way to a bed, although there may have been an unaccounted for Australian lost en route and if anyone can remember what happened to jesse's cell phone it would be much appreciated.
Other than that the sailing has been awesome and if you give Brad Boston enough rum he will get all mushy and show you pictures of his two adorable kids......and this just in......there is third on the way!

Day 3 press release: http://www.viper640.org/component/content/article/14-news/462-no-pain-no-gain-on-day-3-of-viper-north-americans
Pretty wild out here. Not sure any Viper regatta has ever had conditions quite like this so consistently. Some tired, drunk and happy teams out here.
Timbo, Kevin, Jay and Steve,Jim, Nigel and Glenn, Ed, John, Craig, Dennis..........
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you........for sharing your piece of sailing paradise with us. It was an amazing regatta and this exhausted, sore and exhilarated viper sailor from the East coast will be glowing for weeks afterwards.
Timbo, you gave us all an event that reminds us why we all love the sport of racing sailboats!
The whole West Coast viper fleet was so hospitable and so much fun to sail against. You have a really good thing going . I can't say enough so I'm going to shut up.
14 races......each one a keeper!
Pretty epic event. The Class will have to go back to ABYC in the near future. And more boats will have to attend so that others don't miss out. The recent class survey revealed a number of things that people look for when deciding to attend an NAs. ABYC and Long Beach checked all of those boxes. Great job Timbo & Co. Final results: http://www.abyc.org/upload/2014_Viper_NA7.htm
Lots of photos posted online -- 1100 and counting.
Simply an awesome event. Thank you everyone and especially Timbo, et al. at ABYC. Great boat, great people and great racing. It's the reason I bought a Viper!
Thanks again.
Just want to quickly add a few "thank you" s on a personal level.
On behalf of the 5 East Coast boats on Billy's rig.......Thank you to Peter Beardsley for organizing this and pulling it together. We simply would not have been in Long Beach without this option. Your energy, enthusiasm and encouragement got us to the 2014 NAs. I came so close to not being able to make this event but you stayed on my case and I am so glad that you did. Fantastic event.
Nigel Brownett, Viper#34, Snake Eyes, ABYC, Thank you for helping out a brother Viper with a replacement hatch cover. I lost mine somewhere between Norwalk and Los Angeles. The local West Coast hospitality went into overdrive and by the time racing started, local fleet member Nigel had found me a new one.
The folks on the debrief panel....it was really interesting...and a shout out to Curtis Florence who openly shared in detail the step by step boat handling techniques that they used on Brad's winning boat and who seemed on a mission to help everyone get better.
And everyone at ABYC. From the moment I pulled into the club in our hire car we were given the warmest welcome possible.
What a blast! Thanks Timbo and ABYC. We broke down the first day and had some rough races, but the Wild Hogs still had a terrific time.
In case you missed it, a new photo album has been posted from the Committee boats view of things.. ;) Great Stuff!!!!
The photo of "Last Call" is the best!!!!!!!
