Any more talk on a 2013 Viper Circuit in the warm Florida Waters?
Who is game????
Deborah and Craig are in.
Miami Viper Week is a go.
Sat - For Travel
Sunday/ Monday - Viper Regatta
Tuesday/ Wednesday R&R, including : A Viper cruise to a bar/restaurant on Key Biscayne. Coaching and tuning sessions. Beach and sailing with family and friends.
Thursday/Friday/Saturday - Bacardi Cup/Viper Pan Am Championships.
Sun - For Travel.
There will be a more formal announcement in the next few days, but the circuit looks something like this:
Jan. 12-13
Feb. 9-10
Mar. 3-4 (Sun/Mon) (pre Bacardi)
Mar. 8-10 (Thurs-Sat) (Bacardi Cup)
Mast up storage at US Sailing Center in Coconut Grove for those who reserve it. Working on mass boat transportation options -- stay tuned.
Last year we got burned with having to pay two months of storage for 5 weeks use. This year it would be 3 months of storage for under two months of storage. (You have to pay for full calendar months at a time) Does anybody feel like calling Pat and seeing if we can just pay for two months? I would but I am not a very good negotiator when it comes to this stuff.
could we have a pointscore for
mon/tuesday....thurs/fri/sat
maybe call it the viper globals or something???
just be good to have a international name for PR...

I think we will call it something like Miami Race Week (which might evolve into something special if someone gives a trophy). We might also have a drag race on the Tuesday reaching 6 miles out to the restaurant. It is important that Sunday/Monday stays fun. We hope that those who bring their spouse /gf/b/son /daughter/friends see it as an opportunity to race with them on Sunday/Monday .

Has the MGRW been kicked?
MGRW hasn't been kicked -- there's a lot of desire from some folks to have a mast-up circuit at the same venue in Miami. There's also a desire from some folks to attend MGRW. The two are not mutually exclusive -- I'm guessing though that the folks who want to attend the first couple of Miami events may not be willing to drive over to New Orleans. There may be other folks who want to do New Orleans and who miss the first couple of Miami events, but hopefully everyone can rendezvous in Miami for Bacardi Week.
If there are people who want to travel around to all of those regattas, more power to them! They should certainly be encouraged to do so. We did not have much flexibility on Miami dates with other regattas around that time and limited resources.

Has the MGRW been kicked?
MGRW has certainly NOT been kicked.
The week in March means those of us who are not stored in Miami can come to Miami for one week, do two regattas PLUS have two whole days in the middle to play and learn + take less days off work than travelling to two regattas. It makes it a real vacation.
It is also very attractive that they start the sailing on Sunday, so that those of us who leave for Miami on Friday (from New Orleans or Austin or CT) after work can get there in time and throw our rigs up for the first two days of sailing. I think that sends a message that it doesnt exclude other regattas because they have obviously left travel time for those who are not stored in Miami.
It is very doable to do both MGRW in Feb and then come to Miami for the winter Viper festival in March.
In the meantime, registration for Bacardi Cup, aka "Viper Midwinters", is now open: http://www.yachtscoring.com/emenu.cfm?eID=729
NOR for the January event will be out possibly as early as the end of this week.

Vicious Panda signs up in Sept. for a March Regatta? Peter loves Coconut grove!
Looking forward to seeing the other dates get set.
What about a Corinthian Sub Class at Bacardi?
I still have sand in my shoes......
No.
Don't know about a "sub" class, but I think it is a really good thing to recognise the 1st all corinthian team... there is honor there.
I did not ask you. I was asking someone that would say yes.
Why not? Just another tool to help lure sailors to the water?
So where do you draw the line? Don't include registered Cat 3's only? What about Olympic sailors do they get to go for the Corinthian trophy. What about recently down graded form Cat3 to 1?
So if I have a friend who works on a big boat, he is a Cat 3 but sails with me for fun. So now I can't compete for a Corinthian trophy even though I am a Cat 1? What about Cat 1 guys who run a full program and sail more than most pro's?
Sorry not interested in that BS.
Wow, I did not see the other thread. This internet thingy is to big, haha. Sorry about that. Seems it has been talked about.
Matt I was joking!!
The top Corinthian is a better idea. All it is doing is adding more value to class. It will not take anything away. The pros are here and the amount will only increase with the class taking off. This is a good thing (we all get better by sailing against better sailors). Keep that they still cannot get paid. What is the big deal?????
Well, yes that would be an appropriate line to start. Cat 3. You get paid to sail at some point. That is not "Corinthian" sailing. If you are a cat 1 now, then yes. Not hard to down grade if it is true. The process is simple and is already in place.
This something the class should look at for its midwinter's and Nationals. Maybe even to the circuit??
The Viper is a Bad Ass Class because it was built up by CORINTHIANS buying boats and yall made a bad ass class which more pro's want to play in now. (I am not saying they are getting paid) Who doesn't want to sail VIPER 640?
Really doesn't matter to me. Was just a idea. I am done, take it as you want to.
Cheers, see you on the water and in the bar!!!
Im kinda with Sam on this.
We handed out all kinds of prizes at the NAs. It was fun. The whole idea behind Miami Viper Week in March is to have a week in Miami that involves hanging out with friends and family with some darn good sailing. We should have daily Peloton awards again (anyone who hasnt finished on a podium at NAs or sanctioned regatta). We should have furthest travelled. Best sportsperson. Best Crash. Top Amateur/Club Sailor, loosely defined. None of these will take away from the regular awards. We can make up our own rules for some Miami awards. If we want to say that Colin Marshall can compete for an amateur club sailor award and former olympians like Barry Parkin is happy not to qualify for that award...then we can do that. I do like the idea of a serious Peleton trophy for someone who has done a minimum of a year of Viper sailing and never finished on a podium.
The more trophies you have, the greater interest you have in the event. Let's look @ the Etchells Class Worlds and what perpetual trophies they have added over the years. (disclaimer) I won one of these
1. Masters Trophy, Helmsman over 50yrs old
2. Seniors Trophy, Helmsman over 60yrs old
3. Grand Masters, Aggreate crew age over 150yrs old
4. Sportsmanship Award
5. Corinthian Award (Top all Corinthian team)
This is in addition to daily 1st's for each race and Overall trophies. This is in one of the Worlds most competive classes that is chock full of pro's and deep budgets
Where is there dis-honor in any of these? If you won one, would you be embarrased and hide it??
Embrace the corinthians, shake their hand and give them a pat on the back, they are the backbone of sailing.

I can't even find the Jan event on the class website--is there going to be one? We are currently thinking of driving down for the Feb 9-10 event and leaving the boat in place through Bacardi race week.
Any suggestions on best places to stay in Coconut Grove?
Cheers,
John

"If you aint first, you're last" Ricky Bobby's Dad.
Why can't we just give prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd instead of turning the Viper class into an american primary school where everyone gets a prize just for showing up to sports day, so no ones "feelings" get hurt. Winners get prizes, the rest of the field gets to be good sportsmen and congratulate the winner.
Basta.
I am all for a trophy for the amature trophy.. I think it recognizes the teams that put a lot of work in that are not proffesionals.. Our job as pros is to keep the fleet getting better and better, if I get beat buy a all amature team it is the best thing...

Ah Haaa, that explains why Matt sails like he was blindfolded with a cougar in the passenger seat trimming kite.
Re the awards at the NAs....you had to be there. There were two awards speeches. Piet's speech as overall winner was very nice, really it was. But Jeff Danhauer's speech when he came up for his award on Saturday night after race 5 was brilliant and got a standing ovation. The killer last line "We're from Kentucky and we've got bourbon"

Yep - we'd be in
#168 planning Miami for the two race events. Trophy might consist of handle of rum.
Thanks for senior recognition our skipper over 60 and crew 180. Sad isn't it. We have as much
fun as ensure will allow.
Viper #83, Purplexed is thinking about making the trip, we're just trying to work out logistics.
Who is going down? How are you getting the boat there? Where are you storing the boats?

Rob, that is the funniest think I have read on here in quiet a while. I don't often literally laugh out loud while reading the forum, but that did it! Looking forward to seeing you in Miami again.
So what are the dates for Miami racing in 2013? My son is on school break Feb 9th-17th and flights from BDA are around $370 direct... Is there a small fun regatta to bring the little whipper along for?
What are the other dates? I want to line up some other people to charter boats in the spring with hopes to have them become owners.
Concrete dates please.
Are you guys still considering several weekend regattas or is Justin's idea of a week-long event still on the table.
The sooner you guys solidfy these plans, the better chance there will be that a few Texicans will make the trip.
j
Jeff I think the Miami dates are all in the event section of the website. I know we plan on going to the Feb event and Race week. Can't dend the whole week down there. They finally put the NOR up on NOYC.org for MGRW, not sure it can be fitted into anyones plans now but let me know.
You thinking - scratch MGRW 2013 off the schedule Lee?

Craig and Deborah are not planning on bringing the Viper to MGRW. In fact. Don't really see doing MGRW on the Viper in the future.
We are planning on doing MGRW, and I'm pretty sure one or two other California teams are planning on it, too.
-Jimbo
Jeff, my plan was Feb 9-10 in Miami. If enough Vipers sign up for MGRW then I'll bring the boat home after that regatta and do MGRW (23-24). If not I will leave the boat in Miami until Bacardi. I really want MGRW to stay on the schedule. I just think NOYC has not been pushing it like they should. I am pretty sure the VX's will be there in force.
Lee, looks like MGRW has the one-designs racing Feb 14-17.
-Jimbo
Jim, you are correct. Looked at the wrong dates. The plan is still the same.
Lee,
#168 and Pat Gibson are planning MGRW and then traveling
to Miami Race Week should two weekends of racing still be on the
schedule. I have heard some other Texas boats will be at MGRW.
Pat and I are then moving to Miami the following week.
Can we get a head count on how may will be going to the Miami Winter #2 Valentine cup on Feb 09-10th? This is the Weekend before MGRW. Thanks
Snake Spit (#17) will be sailing MGRW.
#158 is in for Feb 8-10, March 2-9th. Would love to see some NOR's and a registration website for the February event.
Dan Tucker is putting together the NORs for January, February and the pre-Bacardi event in March. I know of at least 10+ Vipers who say they're coming in January and February, hopefully we can get the details together on that soon. People should sign up online for the events that are on yachtscoring.com right now though:
Bacardi Cup: http://www.yachtscoring.com/emenu.cfm?eID=729
Charleston: http://www.yachtscoring.com/emenu.cfm?eID=742
#100 is in for Bacardi Cup in Miami fer sure, maybe the weekend thing before as well.
Bringing the Hobie 33 to MGRW, so we will see ya'll there.
Craig and D
Mambo Kings #54 will be at Miami Viper Week.
Word is Sunday/Monday racing. Tuesday/Wednesday Sailing out to the reef and the clinic. Thursday/Friday/sat Bacardi.
Hobie sound awful temting for MGRW.
Justin, if we had an open spot you would be more then welcome. Would love to get to sail with ya sometime.
Craig and D.
Grendel CAN 70 is in for Feb 9-10, and also for all 5 days of racing in March. Any info about how to arrange for boat storage in between will be much appreciated.
Storage options in Miami -- I think most people will be based in Coconut Grove. If you haven't done so already, call the US Sailing Center down there. There are two different rates for Vipers:
1. $210/month or part thereof plus tax = $224.70/month
2. $25/day (plus tax)

For people who are planning to do Bacardi -- SIGN UP! Once people see a bunch more entries, it will be more likely to get the fence sitters to attend. I know of a bunch of people (including some on this thread) who say they are going but who haven't signed up. http://www.yachtscoring.com/emenu.cfm?eID=729
Peter did you confirm the US Sailing Centre fees. Last year we had to pay for a calendar month even if you were there a few days of that month. Has this changed?
The US Sailing Center fees are from Mark Pincus, who is a friend of the Vipers who told us about that deal -- I think it is still all first come, first serve, so people should call and confirm availability and rates and fill out the necessary storage contracts.
#100 is registered for Bacardi.
We are also making arrangements to be there the weekend jsut before Bacarci Cup, so count us in for that weekend too.
Craig and Deborah
Chris, Jon and myself are searching for a charter boat for Miami 2013
Can anyone assist or know what options may be available.
Happy New Year to all.

Purplexed #83 is in for both Miami regattas and Charleston. I am working out logistics for getting the boat down there, anyone interested in ride sharing or splitting the driving? Currently, I plan to make the trip solo and tow the boat. However, I have a quote from a shipping company if anyone would be interested in stacking the boats and having them shipped:
$1700 from Boston to Miami
$850 from Miami to Charleston
Figured I'd put this out there and see if anyone else had any ideas or interest.
The January event did not happen. Here is the schedule for the rest of the circuit:
February 9-10: Valentine's Regatta - NOR to be coming shortly. First warning will be 1200 on Saturday, 1025 on Sunday. Entry fee is $25 (unless you send in your form late, in which case it is $50)
Mar. 3-4 (Sunday/Monday) is the Pre-Bacardi Regatta. Same entry fee, later start time Sunday (1300). Justin is organizing social events Monday night and there will be something organized for Tuesday and Wednesday as well. NOR will also be coming out for that one in the next couple of days.
Mar. 7-9 is Bacardi Cup. 15 Vipers already signed up -- please register online today at http://www.yachtscoring.com/emenu.cfm?eID=729 -- NOR is already up there.
If you want to store your boat at the US Sailing Center in Miami, you need to fill out a storage contract in advance -- go to http://www.usscmiami.org/ for details.
NORs and storage info for Valentine's Regatta and Pre-Bacardi are now posted.
http://viper640.org/calendar/all-events/se/details/156-miami-winter--2-valentine-cup
http://viper640.org/calendar/all-events/se/details/157-miami-winter--3-pre-bacardi-tune-up
What other Class could pull off a weekend of racing in Miami for a $25 entry fee? No, that's not a typo, the entry fee for each of these regattas is only twenty five dollars!
Please hit the links and email the electronic forms back to the folks listed in the NOR.
FYi Bacardi attendees--late fee $100 kicks in Feb 3.
