Registration for the 2012 Viper North Americans is now open -- http://www.yachtscoring.com/emenu.cfm?eID=640
This promises to be the largest Viper NAs to date -- given that we have 41 boats signed up for Charleston and over 50 Vipers within a 4-hour drive of Charleston, and Texans, Californians, Australians, Bermudians and others aiming to attend, a 50 boat fleet seems to be within reach, and maybe if we get enough momentum early, we could have even more. Sign up early and often. If you can only make one regatta this year, make it the NAs.
Sept. 6-9, Eastern YC, Marblehead, MA
http://www.yachtscoring.com/emenu.cfm?eID=640
Housing and charters available on a first-come, first-serve basis, but only for those who register.
7 entries already. First late fee deadline kicks in May 31. Let's try to get to 30 entries by the end of April.
Let's shoot for 15 boats signed up within first 24 hours of opening.
Who's going to be the first from the West Coast?
I'll take #9 please... It's on baby... ;)

Almost at 15 in 12 hours
Now if we can get an Aussie, a Bermudan, Nederlands, and someone from the Republic of Texas, can we call it our first worlds?
Edit: DONE Fifteen boats signed up in first 14 hours. The fifteenth boat was Jeff Lee from Turks and Caicos!
Next target. Twenty by the end of the week.
Might be able to get 20 by the end of today. Already at 18!!!
Craig and Debbie, Laughed and spilt my starbucks.. You owe me a new keyboard. Too much.
Anyway.....20 on first day. Its a good sign.
25 by mid night? Only 3 away
Now up to 24 -- 1 boat per hour. So...by this weekend we should have a 100-boat fleet for North Americans! Why not.
We have our first Texan, our first Californian, and a really strong Canadian turnout. As an added bonus, every registered boat has a name. You don't need to know who your crew are yet, or where you're staying -- all you need is a clear calendar and good intentions. Plenty of time to work out the details.
Are we all doing something wrong? There is only one "kick ass viper 640" registered... how do I get that upgrade?
Had a great meeting with Andy McCormack (the Farr 40 guy). He's building a 4 boat hauler for the Melges 20 fleet. The Melges 20 NA's are in SF Bay this summer and they're trucking boats from all over the USA and shipping boats in from Italy for this. (It's not too late to join the Vipers at the SF Noods Sept 23/24 this year :-))
He wants to build the trailer so that he can haul Vipers too. He believes he can haul 5 Vipers on the same rig and one on top the truck, making for a 6 boat haul. Should keep the price WAY down! With any luck at all, the test run will be WIRW and we hope to convice some more West coast boats to head East for the NA's.
Let's work HARD at getting boats from EVERYWHERE to attend the NA's.

Great news. If the truck can swing by AZ, I know of at least one boat that would hop aboard for a ride to Marblehead....or maybe go from WIRW
Is there an estimate on trailer construction cost? I'm sure a lot of people would be interested in hearing how this plays out and what the cost would be in various configurations (2 boat trailer, 3 boat trailer, 4 boat trailer, mega 6 boat trailer).
And meanwhile in other news, NA registration is not going so quickly elsewhere.

Smiley face.
Those guys will figure it out. In the meantime, our registration has stalled after a major initial push. If you know you're going to be there, just sign up before you forget, esp. so that you can get the early discount on registration before May 31. If you know you're not going to be sailing because of a conflict that weekend, please let Dan Tucker, Daan Goedkoop or me know -- there may be some Australians willing to ship over some wine and rum in exchange for a boat. And if you're concerned that you'll be overmatched at a regatta titled "North American Championship," don't be. Pretend the regatta is called "Viper Family Reunion and Jamboree" and use the week to check out rigging, pick people's brains about go-fast tips and just do some great sailing against fun people.

I will keep EVERYONE posted on this. It's pretty common knowledge that I have been trying to crack this nut for some time now.
Rondar does have a kit to convert two Rondar Trailers to a double. Here's a pic. Looks like the price will run $2K
(http://i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff479/rondarboats/newrondardoubletrailer1.jpg)
This makes it pretty easy for friends to carry 3 boats (one inverted up top). If someone has a truck, they can add a rack to the top and carry 4.
Just registered my kick as Viper 640 'dilligaf' :-D

Sheesh, mr regatta coordinator, you are a tough task master. 30 boats registered in first two days is phenomenal. We've never seen anything like this.
What's more, no notice has gone out to the membership yet. 2/3rd of owners dont even know registration is open.
The Viper jamboree /rendezvous/reunion/tailgate party is on! Let's hear from the hosts what they ahve in store for us.
Hate to rain on the parade but of course the is a stall at around 30 boats. These are the most active members who have signed up. Finding the next ten will take a week or two and getting to 50 will take a month or two. Its the natural order of a volunteer organisation.
Sorry but that's the way its going to be.
Turn that frown upside down, Matt.
That kinda parade raining pisses Deborah off.
Hahahahaha

Well no many more will sign up until the race organizers send out a blast email to the membership......paging Tucker, paging Goedkoop.
But still an awesome opening sign up.
While you guys are playing in Charleston (wish I could be there) something to look forward to when you come home, only 12 needed to reach 50!!
What are the chances of a charter boat. Thats a hell of along way from Bourbon St.
Charters are going to be hard to find, but we'll be keeping people posted on opportunities. To the extent they come through the class or Rondar, I suspect there will be some desire to make sure they go to teams who are traveling the farthest distance who are unable to bring boats, which as of now includes our two Australian teams at minimum.
Looked at weather history for the are in Sept, looks like 8-10 is the average. Does this sound right?
From http://2012na.viper640.org/about
Weather and Sailing Conditions
The breeze in late September is reliable. The typical breeze is South Westerly and can be expected to be around 10- 15 knots with gusts in the higher teens. Northerlies are more frequent at this time of year and can produce 20 knots. The race area is a championship course location located about 1 ½ mile offshore which has hosted Etchells World championships and J24 World Championships. It is open and free from obstacles and land effect. There is a mild tide which runs relatively evenly over the entire course.

The cost of a charter boat, would run you the same or more than the cost of shipping you boat there. Plus its not the same as your boat and the chances of getting a charter are slim.
40 entries now.
Now up to 44 entries. Reminder that the early registration discount ends on May 31, and we're already in the month of May. Get those plans together and sign up online today. http://www.yachtscoring.com/emenu.cfm?eID=640

This just in! New sponsorship from Mauri Pro Sailing, for a lucky registrant!
Free $250 for Sailing Gear for the 50th. boat to register (and participate).
The fine print:
- Applies to Gill, Henri Lloyd and Slam clothing product only.
- Shipping within the USA only.
- Delivery at the regatta. Must race at the regatta (no signing to win only)
So really, it's the 50th boat to register THAT ACTUALLY SHOWS UP! I have the order of registrations.
Thanks Juan!!
Now up to 48 entries. Early entry discount ends May 31.
49th entry just hit. It is literally now a race to see who will be the 50th entry and get the $250 worth of free sailing gear.
That didn't take long...less than 30 minutes for entry 50 -- Andy Stoddard / Matt Jadamec and Viper 15, "Smiling Bob" (which is also the oldest Viper registered to date for the 2012 NAs). Pretty neat.
Any good leads on housing? Something within stumbling distance of the bars but not too far from the marina.
Be my first trip up there.

In most places, a bay like that would be a nice spot for a an afternoon sail. In Marblehead, it is a gigantic boat parking lot on the way to the ocean! :)
And tips on housing?
I put the word out that you had dibs on a gunboat 60 if one becomes available. I'm optimistic.
but you'd better book a backup just in case.

And tips on housing?
There was a housing email that went out to all registered boats yesterday. If you didn't get it, let me know and I will forward. But there's a housing committee chair and there are recommendations for hotels / motels, and options for staying in people's homes. Lots of options on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Now up to 54 entries, and I hear that a 55th is likely to come shortly.

I dont know if you knew.....but one of the Viper owners does own a Gunboat 60 and we are hoping that he comes to the NAs, sooo there may be one hell of a spectator boat.
Now at 55 entries due to a certain Bermudian.
Will extra regatta event dinner tickets be available for purchase?
OK, inquiring minds want to know... is this probably a t-shirt and shorts event on the water, or will the plastic fantastics be needed?? (other than one of your little fronts that blow through)... :)
Water temp? Air? Humidity?. I know I will look @ the forecast, but what will most of the locals be doing?
Hey Tim,
I'll be expecting warm (high 70s, possibly 80s) with 15kts of breeze and 3' rollers. And of course stunning sunsets from the EYC porch, hanging out with a blissed-out fleet, a cold dark-n-stormy at each person's elbow. Mmmmm!
I'll be planning for a range of possibilities (low 60s thru high 90s, 5 thru 30kts, 1' thru 5' waves).
It's New England: could we get every combination of those possibilities packed into 48 hours?
Reaching out to the Viper Community.
Is anyone kind enough to take me and a crew member in for the Wednesday night before the regatta? We've got a hotel for the remainder of the time but just not for the first night.
Many thanks,
Darren
Thanks Kay, sounds like a perfect time..... :)
