The Viper 640 Class Association and the Viper 640 Pan American Championship Committee is proud to announce formally the format for the 2012 EFG Bank Viper Pan American Championship.  In 2010, the Viper Class along with EFG Bank, started a regatta circuit to score the top Viper regattas throughout North America.  For 2012, the series has expanded slightly, with three types of regattas counting toward the scoring, and boats counting two of their best three scores from the following categories of events:

1. Bacardi Cup / Viper Midwinters
2. One of the Viper regional championships (Gulf Coast Champs, Atlantic Coast Champs, Pacific Coast Champs, New England Champs, with the chance of a Canadian championship being added for 2012)
3. Viper North Americans.

Unlike 2011, in 2012, only a boat's overall regatta result will be counted toward the score.  The winner of the circuit gets his name engraved on the EFG Pan American Championship Series Trophy at the Bacardi Cup and receives a replica of the trophy the following year.

For more details, please read the attached Notice of Series.

The series standings have been updated through Bacardi Cup, and will be updated on the class website and in the forums after each circuit event.

#1
As you can see, the leaders are the ones who have done both events so far.  The throwouts will kick in once someone has done 2 out of 3 events.  For people who missed Bacardi, that means that only the final scores at NAs will start to resemble what you're expecting to see, but at least we'll be able to roll out updated scores regularly, and I may even be able to update them on a rolling basis after the end of each day of NAs depending on connectivity.

UPDATE: had to modify the scores due to the wrong number being in for the DNCs -- 41 in the NOS, not 51 as was posted in the first draft, sorry.

If you are already up on the scoreboard and you are attending CRW, one way to look at the scoreboard is that your goal at CRW is to finish better then the points score under the GulfCoast column to improve your score.

Most of us, me included have a low hurdle....I just have to finish higher than 41.
Craig and Deborah, Robert Williams and El Paso Bob will improve their score with a finish in the top half.
Lee wants to do better than 8th........and trust me, the top 10 at CRW is going to be a tough nut to crack.
Tom can only do better by finishing 1st or 2nd. Ouch. But on the other hand he can afford to roll the dice at CRW which is not a bad thing.

We only carry forward our single best score from the regional championships.

Then after the NAs.......it is our two best results. This really means that each of us enters the NAs with one best score and a discard, hoping to improve on our discard at the NAs.

We'll come up with all kinds of awards:- most succesful in regionals, most improved over the series, most consistent over the series, best overall at the anchor events, most miles travelled over the series, Masters, Grand masters, best EFG logos - a favorite with the Swiss, Best newcomer, Most spectacular death roll - the Mambo Trophy - a favorite with the competitors, Best rivalry between 2 boats (any duel during the series with a battle for points between two or more boats anywhere within the fleet, and this will be a a big award, so go for it, take on your nemsis), The peleton trophy for top 3 in the peleton, Bacardi Trophies for crew- incl crew who attended most regattas, biggest crew smile, crew who saved the day for the boat, crew who led to greatest improvement in performance, The Mechanical Bull trophy for best at party at any event on the circuit, EFG Viperette trophy .

The objective is pretty simple. Attend some great regattas in some great locations.  Score two out of your three best results. Sail fast as you can and have a lot of fun along the way.

Hmmm... Can't I score the 8 for sailing with Sara in Bacardi?? That would put me in the top 10, ahead of Soley!

grumble, grumble, grumble.

Now that I think of it, she did list me as co-skipper for Bacardi!  ;)
Race it like you stole it.

Going into the NAs your best score to date will be important.

So far, the following boats have managed to pick up a score of 6 or less .
The first number is the best score. The number in brackets is the score that would currently put them tied for the lead at the next regatta/NAs.

Carroll  - 1        (6)
Locke   - 1        (6)
Boston - 2        (5)
Scott - 2           (-)
Girling - 3          (4)
Peterson - 3     (4)
Eikel - 3            (4)
Fox - 4              (3)
Lotz - 4             (3)
Sears - 5           (2)
Wilusz - 5          (2)
Scott - 5            (- )
Healey -6           (1)

The next opportunity to pick up points on the East Coast is the Viper New England Championships at Newport Week on 13/15 July. On the West Coast at the Viper Pacific Coast Championships on July 20 at Whidbey Island Race Week.
