Post by: Greg Jackson on December 02, 2010, 01:39:36 PM
The 2011 Birthday Regatta Entry is Now Open!

Register at http://arizonayachtclub.org/?p=1603

Fellow Viper Sailors,

Don?t miss the first major AZ Regatta of 2011 and start of this year's West Coast Circuit! It?s time to get ready for the Arizona Yacht Club Birthday Regatta and the 12th Annual Arizona Leukemia Cup ? the first Leukemia Cup Regatta of 2011 January 14th through the 16th, 2011.

AYC and the Desert Mountain Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society invite you to join in for a full range of on-water and on-shore fun. Activities will include three days of racing Friday through Sunday with meals, entertainment and a special dinner Saturday.  Our keynote speaker Saturday night will be Paralympic GOLD MEDAL WINNER and newly elected U S Sailing Board of Directors Member, Maureen McKinnon-Tucker in addition to our outstanding special auction to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Racing will be from Friday through Sunday (Friday optional, each class will determine two or three days of racing), with the Leukemia Cup being held on Saturday.

Don?t miss Friday night?s dinner.  It is being prepared by the legendary culinary skill of our current Club Champion, Rick Johnson.

Our race committee will have a special look this year too! Andrea Caroe from Mission Bay Yacht Club in San Diego will be our PRO! Many of the Buccaneer and 14.2 sailors will remember her Pink RC flag from their events held at MYC.

Please check the RACING page of www.arizonayachtclub.org for the notice of race, registration and sailing instructions and other updates. Other questions can be sent to me, Regatta Director Greg Jackson,  at [email protected].

So come out and enjoy our desert hospitality up at Lake Peasant, January 14th through the 16th and help us help others through the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

Now that you mention it, I had a couple of shirts that I'm waiting for! And I believe 'the squidge' ordered one the same time I did in the tent.

Hey Guys,

A few clairifications, racing is Friday through Sunday. Saturday will be scored alone for the Leukemia Cup (please sign up for this portion of the regatta as well!), but the three days combined will be scored together for the 2011 Birthday Regatta.

For those of you who got hosed on last year?s shirt order, send me an email so I can order this year?s shirts free to you as replacements. I hope this offer quells your displeasure. As most off you know, I wasn?t a part of last year?s regatta (besides as a competitor).

Glenn, per your request I have bastardized the spelling of regattta to your spelling ? ?regatta?, maybe this will make you happy.

Trailer rentals can be had at http://www.horseshowcampers.com Also at Cruise America, but those will not be set up for you, you will have to pick them up and return them, then drive them to the lake from their Phoenix location.

Hotel deals to follow...

Please send any questions that you might have to me, I want to make sure that you have a satisfying event!

Greg

Greg, I have a question and I thought I would put it here so we can all kick it around..

Have you set up scoring in such a way as to not penalize the boats who can only sail Sat & Sun??

If a boat cannot sail Fri due to work constraints, they may decide to not participate at all and that would be unfortunate...

Tim,

I had not thought of that idea, but I'm sure we could pull somethig off like that if the masses believe it to be a good idea.

I'll let everyone here, either thinking of coming to the event, or already enentered to discuss it.

As of now, it is a three day event...

Thanks for your thoughts,

Greg

I thought last year was practice racing on Friday.
It is likely I cannot make Friday and I know this will test the patience of some, I need to sail with my small keel.  At this time I am just able to put the time together to do trailer and rig work.  New job requires a lot more than I ever imagined-- shoulda stayed a teacher.
If this is a problem with anyone sailing, let me know.  My hope is no hard feelings on these issues this time.
Thanks in advance for your understanding.

Harper is in. Bringing Loula Back with us too. You can't keep her though.

I agree with Timbo. Let's split scoring. We should always do everything we can to encourage folks to come sail with us.

Dave, I wouldn't sweat the keel. Come, have fun. You owe us beers though :-D

and if in front, a 360 @ each mark would be good form...  :)

Greg, I thought last year the Fri sailing was scored seperatly from Sat-Sun...  ??

Okay,

Last year we had a seperate event for Friday, the centerboard challange which was a stand alone event.

After discussing this with many of you, I gathered that the consensus was that to come to AZ you wanted a three day regatta. This is what we now have.

If any of you can determine a proper way to score this as a two day and three day event to make it favorable to all, great! Otherwise it is a three day event.

Now, I need to know who would like to keep their boats in the water at the marina for Friday night through Sunday morning at $20.00 for the entire time as long as we get three boats per BIG slip.

So far we have;
Harper
Tucker

Who else so I can reserve the proper amount of slips...

Thanks,

Greg

Carter would like a slip..

as far as scoring, let's score them seperate, then the folks who can only do Sat-Sun don't feel handicaped..

Put all the scores into the "WCC", then it's as fair as possible.

I am sailing 3 days...

Greg,  please put me down for a slip.

Yes on the U20..  something we've done in the past here is to have an overall 20' sportboat fleet award and sub-awards for any one-design fleets within that catagory.

Good to be inclusive and encourage participation.   BTW, last time we did that the U20 guy purchased a viper ;-)

David, what's wrong with your trailer?  Just get there.. i'm sure it's nothing we cant work out beside the camfire over some rum.  I'll bring my portable welder and drill.

Looks like Dave Morse and company is out for Arizona, as our axle is toast, and has been removed for replacement.  Trailer company is telling us its a five week lead time.  So, any suggestions on how to get a Viper to Arizona, other than towing it on the furniture dollies that its now sitting on?  Is anyone close to Long Beach not going, whereby we could put your boat on our dollies in our space, and put our boat on your trailer?  Otherwise, we'll have to kick butt next year!

This may be good, we would really like to go.

Glenn VanHeel:  I'm in Huntington Beach at Brookhurst and Atlanta.   You're near by?  And when you say I can pick it up...  you're refering to your boat and trailer?  If so, I'll bring your boat to ABYC along with Dave, we'll put Dave's boat in the water, put your boat up on furniture pads on dollies and put your boat in Dave's space, and put Dave's boat on your trailer.  If I pick up your boat on Sunday, I'll put it in my driveway, and then Dave and I can do the trailer swap during the week.  I'm racing my Capri 25 on Sunday, but can pick up your boat after that, or Monday, or whatever...  you tell me.   Will your boat be at your place in HB?  Call my cell at 714-904-0530 so we can work out details.

Thanks GVH for the loan of the trailer-- you are making this event possible for us.
Now I need to remember the offramp for that rocking Mexican Eatery.

Day 1 -Plenty of wind! One memorable screaming run where we were hitting 15's & 16's according to Juan's Velocitek. An epic ride, with the ranking up with the best I've ever had. Chris Ann was a bit shocked I think, but Maureen and I were hootin' and hollerin'. There were a few keels airing out on a few runs and even on one beat. This blizzard escapee was very happy in the AZ sun in just shorts and a long sleeve tech shirt.  :)

Day 2 is shaping up nicely, though with probably slightly less breeze.

I'm back in Marblehead, the weather announcement prior to landing was 17 deg F, and I thought, "Turn this plane around NOW!" Currently 23 deg F, snowing, with freezing rain to come. Not a cactus in sight. Now I can only look forward to Miami!

I had an absolute blast. Friday was pretty fantastic, including that one epic run. I struggled to find boatspeed in the uber-light stuff, but who cares. I never even looked at the scores on Sunday. This regatta was all of the things I love about the Viper class- great fun on the water and greater fun ashore with friends old and new. I'm thrilled that I FINALLY got to a western regatta to meet a bunch of folks who were previously online only friends. I hope to get to TX and Long Beach later this year too.

Greg, thanks for loaning me your boat and Chrisann! Thanks also to Tony and Greg for getting Maureen and I out there in the first place, to have Maureen speak, and your incredible hospitality.

BTW, Maureen is now officially and completely snake-bitten! She told me she's going to be miserable going back to the Sonar for the next 2.5 weeks. Not that I didn't already know this, but she is a FANTASTIC kite trimmer -light air or nuking. Anyone know where I can get a carbon tube long enough to span the tanks at the mainsheet, to build her a transfer bar? We need to work on her body mechanics and an adaptive aid for transfers during tacks and gybes.

Thanks again to all!

Dan

I was just talking to Chrisann about how you guys were trying to duplicate Juan's jib in the light air... I forgot to tell you that I had my jib cut flat because we are normally 130 pds lighter than most and we suffer in the heavy!

Now you know why he got you...

Thanks again everyone for coming out!
