Title: Vipers In Newport RI
Post by: Jep Peacock on September 27, 2010, 02:49:46 PM
Hey Guys and Gals,
Just wondering if there is anyone else on the fence about getting a Viper and sailing it in Newport.  We've got 3 there now and one on the way for next year!  Were looking to get two nights of 1D racing going on Mon and Wed. I'm curious as to the number of vipers needed to reach critical mass where Sail Newport will need another hoist!!  So if anyone has questions about storrage or the like please feel free to call me: 401-864-2127 or email [email protected].
Cheers,
Jep

Ok, I'm starting to get some interest.  We're up to 5 boats for next year and still counting!  Next question  for those of you out there who don't have a Viper... Who might be interested in chartering one in 2011 for summer weeknight racing on Mondays and/or Wednesdays and/or local regattas?  If you could pick, at the beginning of the year, what series you would want to do and some of the one-day events, and local regattas like the Coastal Living Regatta, would you be interested in chartering?  Any thoughts and questions would be greatly appreciated.
Jep

Who is number 5?
Ben Jacobson and who else?
I have taken out enough boat jigs on my boat that one of em must buy one!

The 5th will be David Dougherty, he and his son have come out with me on a couple of nuking days and they had a blast even when we wiped out a few times. I am pretty sure he's going to get a boat before next season. Plus Ben Steinberg is hopefully going to be relocating to Newport! So that would make 6!

Looks like another two sets of owners are jumping into the class in Newport this week.

Watch out WLIS and Marblehead, the Newport fleet is getting feisty.

Time for a Newport/LIS/Marblehead Challenge cup?

Winner has to drink out of the Cup, losers out of a dinghy boot.

If its alcohol, Matt Sole (Newport fleet) will drink it out of anything. I have the proof of that.

I thought we had a deal that nothing from Bermuda ever got mentioned again on main land. You were not so innocent your self!

Good idea Justin. We could do a Viper Americas Cup (VAC).  It could take place on a weekend having a challenger and defender series on Saturday and a match race between the winners on Sunday.  Best of 3 or 5 races.  The first VAC would be in Newport for obvious reasons, and hopefully we'll start another "Longest Winning Streak" in sports history.  We'll have to work on the deed of gift over some pints.

I heard through the grape vine today that #38 will be coming to Newport, which makes 8 boats and counting!

Awesome.  Are you guys planning a weeknight one design series this summer?  Can I come over and crew for somebody (if it's not Weds nights)?

We haven't worked out all the details yet, but we will most likely be doing one-design on Tuesday nights and phrf with other sportboats on Mondays.

To anyone not on the Newport Local email list.  We will be having a meeting on Saturday Dec. 18th to discuss Newport's Viper racing schedule for 2011.  From the sounds of it Newport will be the next Viper hot spot with several weekend regattas, day races, one dedicated night for 1D racing and possibly 2 nights of PHRF racing as well!!!  If you want to attend please email me or Zach for details.

What do we need to do to get recognised as a separate fleet?
I think the rebel Newport fleet has officially splintered from the wing of the Marblehead fleet.
May we please have our own regional sectional in the forums!!

More importantly, at your rate of growth, can the Marblehead fleet shelter under your wing.
Geez.....every time I check up on hull numbers, someone else has ordered a boat in Newport. Glad the economy is working for someone.

I am still not sure of the projected May 2011 number at Sail Newport.
There are still a few people looking for project boats if any are left.

All that being said, the new Newport Viper owners who want to keep their boat at Sail Newport should let them know ASAP that they'll need a spot. I almost didn't get one last summer. The yard manager is awesome and he asked we let him know so he can fit all of us in together in the North lot near the hoists.

I hope y'all realize that the June regatta at Newport is going to be huge. I think it will be the biggest regatta on the East Coast in 2011 (like the HPDO last year).

We have got some interesting sponsorship lined up. 95% there. I'll let y'all know details as soon as they give the final blessing.

If any of you have some "housing" ideas I think that would be a real plus. Maybe a big ole house somewhare that we can rent for the weeknd and house 5 Viper teams?

We all met on Saturday and I'm psyched to say the Newport Viper Class has formed!!! I'd like to be the first one to thank Zach for taking the reins as the Newport class captain.  I also wanted to give special thanks to Paul Zimmerman and Dave Nickerson for joining us, offering their insights, and support.

The Newport Viper fleet will have at least 7 boats next season. We have decided that we will sail our one-design series on Tuesday nights with the Newport Yacht Club leaving the option to race PHRF on either Mondays or Wednesdays with the IYAC or NYC respectively.  We will also use the results from the Wickford Regatta (May 21-22), Leukemia Cup (June 4), Bacardi Cup (June 24-26), Coastal Living Newport Regatta (July 9-10), and the CYC Around Jamestown Race (Sept 4) for a separate series.  We plan on having a tuning/coaching session on June 18.   Anyone coming in for the Bacardi Cup or Coastal Living Regatta are welcome to join us in our regular series.

So did anyone get a Viper for Christmas?  The official count is now 8 for Newport.  Merry Christmas everyone!

Jesus 8??

Looks like I will have to get to sail Newport early to get a decent spot.
Are the official 8 current owners and paid for new builds or are there a few, definites without handing over the cash?
Names of the 8?

My Best friend is from Woonsocket and he's SO damn stoked to go racing on a Viper.

Seem like we have four M32 teams now and I'm floating the concept amongst the Western and Japanese teams to see if we can spark some interest with them too!

Keep up the great work !!

That is excellent news.  Now how do we get all those Newport Vipers signed up for Bacardi in June?  Up to 15 entries and climbing each week.

We had a Smashing Start to Newport's Tues night racing!! 5 boats, one a few minnutes late to the start upholding the Viper tradition of  a new full assembly in the parking lot just prior to he first gun!!! Several (5)boats still on the way and we've been getting lots of interest from a lot of local talent so we've reached critical mass and will have even more Vipers next year! A big thanks to everyone who helped us along the way. It's going to be an amazing season! See you at Bacardi.
Glad To Be Here,
Jep

That is awesome.  You guys should post your local results in the Newport forum each week for gawkers and other curious onlookers -- we'll do the same in WLIS.

wasn't it 6 boats with 2 late?  I know both us and Chuck/Tom were late...  I had to sail to Jametown to pick up my crew and they started the race early by my watch...

It was 5 last night with Jep, Ben S., Chuck/Tom, you and myself.  The Celeratas team was out practicing in the Swan 42, and Bliksem stayed on its trailer.  I expect the Lotzs' boat will be ready to join us in the next week or so.  We had to have set a record for getting Chuck and Tom's boat commissioned and in the water.  It looked like Chuck had just started unpacking the boat(hardware and lines were still in plastic bags) when I got there around 4:00 and it was in the water by 5:30.
