Hi All

Joined the site yesterday.  I am in Santa Barbara and I am planning to pick up #53 from Bill Chase in Monterey within the next week or so.

My goal is to sail with my daughter who is 9.  She jumped into her "seashells" Sabot program this summer and has just loved it, cruised through her solos and is driving like she means it.  We want a boat we can sail together and progress on together and we like the combination of the dingy style with the righting moment of the keel.  Not super important to us at the moment that it carries older rigging, we can deal with that later if things go well.  Probably will be starting out in fairly light conditions for a while, and I have some good friends who are well experienced who are stoked to head out with us as well.  The boat will be named "Honeybee."

I am interested in any tuning and rigging tips and advice from anyone who still sails the Al rig, or the "tin" rig as you appear to call it, have only found stuff for updated rigs on the site so far.  But it seems there are tree-trunkers still out there, so any resources for the old rig would be appreciated.

I have already reached out to Geoff here in town and he has already encouraged me to get out on the line.  Seems like a great class and I've read through a bunch of the threads, very good info and I dig how much everyone promotes the boat.

I'll send some pics once I get her down here.  Cheers.

Picked up the new family toy, super stoked!  Attached is a pic of me and the happy captain...

Hull is in great shape, in the process of replacing all the lines, looks like it has been sitting for a while and I am sure to have a bunch of questions- here is the first one:

RE:  6.4 (a) and (b), my boat has Al rig and I will be using a vang at least for the time being.  Rule states "vang shall not be changed from the original configuration,"  but what is the original configuration?  In (c) describing the gnav, it describes an acceptable range of purchase 8:1 to 16:1.  Is it fair to assume this is also true for the vang?  Currently planning to use a simple 6:1 with a cascade doubler for 12:1 overall, but that will require adding a second attachment ring at the mast base.

Any insight appreciated!

Congratulations on the boat Doug.  That's my favourite hull colour!

Yes, congrats!  Hopefully we'll see you at SBYC when we come down.

Congrats! Getting my now 18 y.o. daughter hooked on sailing a young age was one of my great successes as a parent, and Viper sailing was (and still is) a huge part of that.

It's been ages since I had an aluminum rig. Pretty sure the vang was 8:1 total -4:1 doubled with a cascade. I'm equally certain that there was only one attachment point at the mast base. We used the 4:1 as the keel hoist, to the main halyard, wrapped once or twice around the mast. (Not recommended with a carbon rig)
