Title: Next years schedule
Post by: Doug Mroz on October 12, 2011, 11:00:19 AM
Anybody know what next years schedule looks like? Specifically NAs and Newport regatta? Some of the schedule is up, but not all of it.

We're going to be overhauling the schedule portion of the website in all likelihood to make it easier to read and easier to see what events are happening where and when, and will try to get dates out as soon as possible.  Everything is still in draft form right now.

NAs are currently scheduled for late September in Marblehead, but Dan/Olaf/Paul are going to talk to the clubs up there to see if that can be moved up by 2-3 weeks to avoid a conflict with Melges 32 Worlds that would inevitably siphon off at least a half dozen Vipers.

I don't have a date for ACCs in Newport yet, but we should confirm with Bacardi/StudioMilano that the same dates are ok, since otherwise the America's Cup World Series will be camping out at Ft. Adams June 23-July 2 in 2012, which could make for a bit of a zoo.

On the east coast, a few dates are set in stone:
Miami # 1 (name TBD): February 11-12
Bacardi Cup Miami: March 9-12
Coral Reef Cup Miami (MAYBE in 2012, definitely in 2013): March 23-25
Charleston Race Week: April 19-23
Wickford Regatta (RI): May 19-20
Larchmont Memorial Day Regatta & Clinic: May 26-27
ACCs: TBD
Newport Regatta: July 14-15
Larchmont Race Week: July 14-15, 22-23
Marblehead NOOD: July 27-29
YRALIS Champs (western CT): Aug. 4-5
Possible eastern CT regatta in mid to late August for the Mystic guys

Let me add to Peter's list

CORK, August 24-26

and, from another thread NA's at EYC Marblehead, Sept 27-30.  Is this still correct?

Do we have a date for the Sarnia OD's?

Matt,

Thanks for the additions.  If anyone else has additions of local regattas (doesn't have to just be east coast -- we'll be doing the national 2012 schedule and we want people everywhere to know about Viper events.  We'll keep it limited to "events where Vipers can/will have one design starts" to avoid the PHRF problem and a gigantic universe of potential regattas), please post here so that I have them compiled in one place.

See my prior post on dates for NAs.  Matt is right on the current date, which was set before people realized there was a Melges 32 Worlds conflict.  Since the Worlds are in Newport, there is a chance of losing a bunch of Viper sailors (those who own M32s, those who crew on M32s), and we'd like to find a way if possible to prevent the two from conflicting.  Of course, that involves the clubs in Marblehead being flexible on hosting dates and some other related logistical changes that the M'headers are looking into.  No change is set in stone on the NA dates, but please don't book hotel rooms just yet until we figure this one out (hopefully in the next week or two at latest).

MGRW Mardi Gras,  FEBRUARY 23-26, 2012
http://www.mardigrasraceweek.org/

I'm liking it:  MGRW --> Coral Reef Cup --> Bacardi/Miami --> Charleston

We are trying for a event in Chicago in June time frame.

I have been discussing this with Dan and Drew.

You'd better start conditioning your liver Furma.

I'd like to see a regatta in Houston sometime in March. I'm in for Mardi Gras and would like to leave the boat in Houston instead of driving it all the way to Miami before Charleston....

What's the 2012 Texas schedule looking like?

Shuck said you boys from Texas couldn't party, so I'll be OK....they don't sell Irish Car bombs in Texas do they?

Peter

Regarding the NAs, the M32 & Farr40 worlds overlap & they are in talks
too change this so that may delay when you get dates

To be honest, I don't see that teams that are doing the M32 worlds touching their Vipers two weeks before their big event. With a 40+ attendance anyway I don't see the need to worry about a few M32 teams who are otherwise engaged. Its pretty bad that a year out and we have no firm dates.

Deborah and I agree with Matt.  Set a date and stick to it.  People can make their own choices to either race a M32, F40, or Viper.  IF those M32 teams want to they can charter out their Vipers for the NACs anyway it seems.

Do we really want another class pushing our class decisons on scheduling?  What next.

The Class should have firm dates for NACs on a consitstnat basis.  It shows consistancy, strength, and solid class managment to other folks who may be looking into the class.

My two Canadian Cents worth any way (I still have a cupfull of Canadian Coinage leftover)

Southern Bay Race Week in Virginia seems to be hard for anyone to make. What about the Annapolis NOODS? Might be easier for Northern boats to make. Still close enough to stir up some Chesapeake bay interest.  May 4, 5, 6. Lots of people talking about these boats around here but no one has had any exposure to them.

Annapolis NOOD could be a lot of fun.  There will be a bunch of boats driving north from Charleston two weeks earlier.  Do you think you might be able to help find a cheap/safe place to store our boats for 2 weeks?

I will have to find a contact in Annapolis.  I have a place in Va. about three hrs south but the Northern guys will not want to drive an extra six hrs to pick up their boats. If this is OK let me know. SBRW is a great regatta but if we can get more boats in Annapolis that is better. If we can get five boats to get a start we can do both.

Update for 2012:
My earlier schedule jumped the gun (as did much of that email).  Here's what we know about 2012 winter east coast now:

Feb. 11-12: Miami event # 1 (name TBD), co-hosted with the J/80s
Mar. 9-12: Miami event # 2 (Bacardi Cup)

There is a *chance* that there will be a third Miami event Mar. 23-25, but that is not set in stone for 2012, but I am told that it is more of a done deal for 2013.  And of course, there is Charleston, as well as a Gulf Coast circuit (including Mardi Gras) for those who want to do that.

There will be an option for mast up storage at the US Sailing Center in Coconut Grove, details forthcoming.

As for 2012 NAs -- I really shouldn't have said anything, it's not my regatta.  The organizers haven't moved the date yet, and may never move the date.  That was me stirring the pot since there was talk of moving the date to accommodate additional sailors in the class, but it may never happen.  I suspect Dan will make an announcement on the dates soon, and hopefully there will be an NOR and online registration opening up before Jan. 1, 2012 to start rallying the troops.

Huge thanks to Dan Tucker for spending a lot of man hours making Miami happen.

If you haven't already got two Vipers........Get with the program.

I think those that are pushing for the 3rd Miami event in March are some that want to do MGRW and then two regattas in Miami.
