Nice tack at 0:57, Captain!

And what's up with 1:52?  Hope Kay didn't need to alter course...

At 0:57, my jib trimmer was too busy playing with his camera to bother to tack the jib!

At 1:52, ask yourself about overlap, and who was actually fouled!  ;)

Looked like to me that inside boat was also on starboard to Kay's port tack.

1:51:  Sorry Cap'n, the frame by frame is pretty damning...!  LOL  Though admittedly it's a tough angle to judge.  But... given the huge difference in boat speed and the 3 boat length circle (port/starboard irrelevant), I gotta make the call in Kay's favor and extrapolate that he'd been there quite a while.

Too funny what shows up in videos...

See you in Newport!

The P/S is not why he owed me room. You're mistaken in one key way... Kay was on port gybe approach for many boat lengths (10+?), I was on starboard/inside. Overlap was established by opposite gybe/angles AGES before we got to the zone (and maintained). His transom perpendicular was boat lengths behind me when we arrived at the zone. That part isn't on the video. I hit the mark as a result of him not giving room. I should have protested, but it was a Saturday club race, so I did a circle for hitting the mark and let the foul go. Next time I'll protest and not do the circle.

Very much like this diagram: http://www.yachtsandyachting.com/forum/uploads/249/OLAP1.gif but I (inside green) was even further ahead due to bigger gybe angles than depicted.

Given that diagram, you're owed room (including room to gybe) due to the overlap.  But the port/starboard still matters - when the inside boat is ROW, the outside must also "keep clear" in addition to giving room, which means you should be able to sail your proper course around the mark, not just a minimal room rounding.

Right?

Allright, now I've got to go look at a darned rulebook!

Rule 18 is so much fun.

You know what they say:  "Denial ain't a river in Egypt...!"  LOL

Okay fine, if there was an overlap, then...

I'll second Jay's remark.  On starboard you get mark room AND proper course, at least up until the time you jibe.
