Title: Beam reach Viper targets?
Post by: Charlie Visser on September 14, 2010, 04:53:43 PM
Trying to roughly approximate the complete Viper polar. I have the upwind and downwind targets from North, but I'm looking for some boat speed numbers (however rough) for two-sail beam reaching. Can anyone help?

How hard is it blowing???

We were doing 14-16 under white sails in San Fran a couple of weeks ago....  BUT....  it was blowing the urchins off the rocks.....  ;)

So it was blowing 20 kts? 25 kts? More? (My urchin calibration is rusty.)

Goverment said gusts into mid to high 30's.  Beam reaching @ 90 deg apparent was a bit violent..  =:0

90 AWA would mean about 120 TWA at 15 knots boat speed and 30 kts TWS.

All I know is that I had to sail across a butt load of breeze to get back where we launched...you could not "trim" the sails without having about 300# more on the rail otherwise the boat would just be slapped down.  Too busy trying to pay attention to look @ the GPS....  found out later it drowned..
