Title: Help on Designing 2011 West Coast Circuit
Post by: Drew Harper on September 28, 2010, 11:57:26 AM
2010 West Coast Viper circuit roared to an end at last weekends Sailing Anarchy ISAF regatta. Congrats to Chris 'Squidge' Winnard for a hard fought win.

This Year we had 21 participants from AZ,CA,NM,TX,WA on 19 different boats 6 different venues and 33 starts .

Our 2010 schedule was
January - AZ Leukemia Cup
March - San Diego Noods
June - Long Beach Race Week
July - Huntington Lake - High Sierra
August - San Francisco - Sarcoma Cup
Sept - San Diego - SA ISAF

Now the task is to design a well attended 2011.

The single most comment about 2010 was the big gap between March and June, right in the prime of the Spring sailing season.

Add to that, we are trying to incorporate the new Pacific Northwest Fleet into the schedule and come up with a combined West Coast/South Coast (Texas fleet) event somewhere reachable.

Here's my first shot at 2011

January - AZ Leukemia Cup
February - San Diego (SDYC MidWinters)
March - San Diego Noods
April -
May -
June - Long Beach Race Week
July - Huntington Lake - High Sierra
August - ?
Sept - San Diego - SA ISAF
Oct - ?

Drew a few thoughts...

Texas in August or October with thier cooler weather?

When is the "prime" season in the PNW?

How about another centralized regatta for the entire region. Lake Meade NV?

Also, with eleven or so regattas, how about three or four regatta throw outs?

also revamp the scoring system. no one should attend only 1 regatta and finish 2nd overall in points! there should be points awarded for just attending a regatta.

OK, changed SD mids in Feb to ABYC. Makes sense. Added Leuk Cup to Oct for SF. Sarcoma Cup may just not happen in 2011 and Berkeley YC is a tough club to sail out of....no hoist or storage.

We REALLY need PNW events !!!

I didn't devise the scoring system Glenn, but I agree. There needs to be points added for just showing up.

January - AZ Leukemia Cup
February - long beach scya midwinters
March - San Diego Noods
April -
May -
June - Long Beach Race Week
July - Huntington Lake - High Sierra
August - ?
Sept - San Diego - SA ISAF
Oct - San Fran - Leukemia Cup

I thought Berkeley was a perfect venue. Launch ramp across from the club, hotel in the marina, and club is at the harbor enterance. Except for that irate express 27 owner it was great. Unless there's a better place you know of? ???????

With all the interest in San Diego, particularly Mission Bay YC, my vote is for SCYA's there. One day outside, one day inside. Great place to show off the boats.

Great Pumpkin in San Fran would be fun.

January - AZ Leukemia Cup
February - San Diego (SDYC MidWinters)
March - San Diego Noods
April -
May - Memorial Day Regatta. Eugene, OR or Seattle NOOD
June - Long Beach Race Week
July - Whidbey Island Race Week
August - ?
Sept -  Spud Cup. Sandpoint, ID (Labor Day Weekend). San Diego - SA ISAF
Oct - Great Pumpkin?

To All,
yes the point system is going to be re vamped . As Timbo and Chris proposed,
1 pt for every start, 1 pt for every boat you beat on the water. Simple enough ?

For the calendar, why not Texas in May ? . John R, Tony and I tried Fort Worth
in October in 2007 ,nice velue and people but it was blowing really hard (we hit 23 knots boat speed on the Velocitek ...Steve F broke his carbon mast).

Ok, I added the Vallejo race. We don't really have any distance races and I HATE the Ditch run. Kills a kite with over 100 gybes. Would be FUN with a pole and squared off sym kite though :-))

Vallejo is a GREAT ride and we simply haul out at the end or tough it out and slug home on Sunday in the horrible San Pablo Bay 4' chop.

Keep up with the feedback folks.

January - AZ Leukemia Cup
February - San Diego (SDYC MidWinters)
March - San Diego Noods
April - San Francisco - Vallejo Race (usually last weekend in April)
May - Memorial Day Regatta. Eugene, OR or Seattle NOOD
June - Long Beach Race Week
July - Whidbey Island Race Week or High Sierra
August - ?
Sept -  Spud Cup. Sandpoint, ID (Labor Day Weekend). San Diego - SA ISAF
Oct - Great Pumpkin?

DCYC (Dallas Corintian Yacht Club) Leukemia cup will probably be the first of our championship series next year.  Last year it was the first weekend in May, should be ARO that time next year.    Should be >10 Texas boats

I'm keen on Arizona and might be in for Feb in Diego.  I think the TX road warriors are heading East in March - Charleston RW.

I think this is getting close.... a couple of comments ...  looks like about 6k miles of driving in April & May..   :(

I think both venues need to be supported but let's alternate, Texas one year, Seattle the next...??

Also the SF leukemia looks like the following weekend after ISAF.......could the PNW boats meet us in SF?

I'm wishing for a one design start @ ISAF.....

Interesting. Seems in line with the schedule...sort of. Not sure how this plays into AZ schedule.

Here's the wind stats. http://www.windfinder.com/windstats/windstatistic_dallas_ft_worth_airport_grapevine_lake.htm

What's your experience in May for this location...wind & weather?

Drew,

I don't think you have the right lake! Check Lewisville / Denton / Frisco (not kidding!).
For the AZ fleet , it is fine, our local spring series is over by early April.

Lauent, great breeze and mild temps that time of year, nice moderate temps.  Wind shuts off and the oven gets turned on July through mid Sept.

No- May 6-8, 2011 is Fri-Sun.   The racing is only Sat-Sun, though if you all wanted I bet we could run on Fri as well.  They are expecting a good turnout this year, it is our 10th Annual LCR.  We are hoping to get 10 Melges 24's, about 15 J 22's and quite a few J24's along with many phrf boats.   The J24 NA's is there the following week to give you an idea on how good the weather is that time of year.  As Jeff said- great breeze and warm (but not hot) temps.

We will definitely be on a 1D course- likely with the Melgi.  Mount Gay of course is a sponsor of the LCR series and will be a big player at this regatta.  Come on out to play!!

Change Feb 19-20 to MBYC (not SDYC).  MBYC is in San Diego, but it is Mission Bay rather than San Diego Bay.

I'm a little torn about Seattle NOOD vs Memorial Day Regatta in Eugene, OR

SEA NOOD plusses: higher profile event but expensive entry and requires hotels, joining US Sailing (grr) etc.

EYC Memorial Day - 5 hours closer. Camping on site for those so inclined. Cheap entry. Great venue.

What do you think? We want max participation.
