Meandering between 15 and 16 boats, weather will be warm, mostly sunny, and we'll have wind -- maybe not as much as Justin mentioned, but it could end up being a lot better than that (11-16 kts both days fairly consistent from a non-shifty direction that wouldn't give locals a particular advantage -- not that such things really matter that much in WLIS anyway once you get away from shore).  Bring sunscreen and shorts.

'twas a great weekend!  Larchmont is a beautiful, expansive club with lots of friendly members and staff.  Thanks!

Saturday's weather was gorgeous and perfectly queued for the NY/New England season. The breeze was up early, though from apparently an unusual easterly.  The RC started a race with ~15 boats on the line, but abandoned it when the sea breeze came up and shifted south.  It took a little while to reset, but then we got in two good longish races before it was BBQ time.

The BBQ was hosted by the Larchmont folks, with very tasty, catered, perfectly cooked burgers and dogs, and props to Somers Kempe of Bermuda who imported three+ bottles of Goslings 140.  Needless to say, the average BAC spiked quickly...  The early risers slowly peeled off, leaving the die hards with the rest of the keg.  Not long after we adjourned to BarCelona  in Greenwich, which I guess is the place where the local girls go cruising for millionaires.  Unfortunately, none of us single guys qualified (well, that was just me I think...!), but nevertheless, fun times and much drunken dancing ensued.

Sunday started out looking a little light, but again the weather was perfect and the sea breeze filled in.  2:30 gun each day.  The the RC had promised a shorter course, but unfortunately they set it with an unusual mark while also putting a longer weather mark out with the properly prescribed identification. I guess some people got the radio advisory, but the leaders all overstood by a long way before figuring out that the fleet had split into long/short course.  4 boats including myself, Justin, Rattler, and another finished the long course in protest, and though the race was ultimately thrown out (yes, long course was ruled by the jury to have been proper), I'll still take it as my first Viper OD bullet.  I had the pleasure of sailing with soon-to-be-Viper-owner Chuck Allen of North Sails, who not only was a ton of fun and pretty patient (in his own sort of way) with our mistakes, but I learned a LOT from him.

I haven't seen the full standings--I think Pieter Taselaar, David Owen, Justin Scott were 1-2-3.

The longest drive award went to Kelly Bechard and and crew who drove down from Sarnia with some cases of Labatt's in the boat, perfect for the de-rigging party.  Thanks guys, glad you could make it.    Maureen Tucker also accompanied Dan on the Rat' with some carefully crafted hardware.  She said she got thrown around pretty good so some engineering is still needed, but thumbs up all around.

Also, special personal thanks to Tim Porter, a LYC member who was gracious enough to take my folks out on his pleasure boat for some spectating.

A few pic's attached.

I had a great time checking in with everyone.  The Larchmont fleet looks set to take off with a bunch of great enthusiastic people which is awesome.

Thanks for the hospitality Justin (and the drive!) and thanks to Simon for the airport pickup too.

I am hoping I can repay the favor sometime in the future back here on the rock, but in the meantime if anyone is coming to Bermuda for vacation or "business" don't hesitate to look me up.

Somers

p.s. - next time I will leave the 140 proof at home so Justin doesn't suffer any more memory loss.  :)

Not sure if I agree with the "all the leaders went to the wrong mark" comment, but we'll let that one go for now as it didn't affect the top two places.  But I think at least half of the first 5-6 boats at the windward mark went around the correct mark at the correct time, and a couple of others sailed a couple of boatlengths past before figuring it out.  Was more confusing than ideal and I don't love having *my* first Viper bullet thrown out, but whatever.  Will ask the RC to dig up the Race 3 standings at some point for those who are curious to post as everyone's "throwout" race.  There will be a lot more photos coming in the next couple of days.

That was the ruling of the jury, so I was told at least. The red tetrahedron was what the SI's called for, for the Viper class, and thus was deemed the proper race course.  However, the consensus of those at protest hearing was evidently to just toss the whole race.  The whole thing is certainly unfortunate.

Tasselaar went even further left than we did though by the time we all noticed (he went back).  Dunno how it played out.

Congrats on your short course bullet.  Happy to share!

Thanks to the Larchmont group for a great regatta. It was cool to see all the new owners on the water enjoying their new toys. My crew and I were happy to make the trip out for good racing and company.

Many thanks to the Larchmont fleet for their organization at the hoist on Sunday afternoon. They won the race to the hoist but graciously docked their boats out of the way and left the hoist open for the boats who had the furthest to travel.

I heard lots of talk and we answered a bunch of questions about NA's in Sarnia in September. Hoping to see everyone in Sarnia in the fall.

For the masochists, attached are the unofficial results that include Race 3, which was of course thrown out post protest.  Really this is just for the couple of people who wanted to see the race 3 results.

There are some photos posted at http://www.larchmontyc.org/racing/MemD2010public.shtml from Sunday's lighter air -- there are some Saturday shots floating around from the bigger breeze but they are not online unfortunately.
