Title: Charleston Race Week -2012. Let's make it the largest Viper attendance ever.
Post by: Justin Scott on December 08, 2011, 07:43:31 AM
Registration has opened.

Currently, the Viper class has the largest fleet at Charleston ! We have 2 boats signed up immediately. The J80s have only 1.

I thought I'd be first to sign up but Jonathan Nye has beat me to the punch. How does he do it?

In.  Note that 2012 Charleston RW is also the Viper class's Atlantic Coast Championship.  Despite being several hundred miles from the Atlantic Coast, a Texan will still be allowed to take home the perpetual trophy if it comes to that.

Also, the link posted above is incorrect -- NOR and entry form for CRW 2012 is at http://www.yachtscoring.com/emenu.cfm?eID=552

Now up to 9 Vipers in no time at all.

And now 11.  Here comes the snowball effect...entries beget entries.  Two midwest boats before the first Texan, though it's probably still nice weather in Texas so that people aren't couped up in their houses with the heat on planning out their next regatta 4 months down the line.

15.  I almost want to keep hitting refresh every hour or so to watch this increase, but then I remember I have a job.  But still, let's keep 'em coming.  It'll at least show everyone that the Vipers can rally turnout just as well as the Melges 20 guys, at a fraction of the cost.  Looks like this still hasn't found the radar of the Newport guys yet...

Houston, we have our first Houston entry.  And the first Houston entry beats the first Rhode Island entry -- they must be really snowed in bad in Newport.

For anyone who needs a reminder of what's at stake, the M20 guys are feeling their oats from their Miami circuit, deservedly so after getting 40 boats on the line.  But now they're talking back:

Posted Today, 07:41 PM
Congrats to the Melges team for getting 40 boats to the line. As a former M20 owner I always knew it would happen. The best thing I have seen is all of Viper guys eating crow right now. After the on slot of BS we got about paying what we do for the boats. It will be really nice to see the M20 with 10-20 more boats consistently on the line more than Viper in just a short time.
--------------------------

Not worth replying -- best response is to put a ton of Vipers on the line (and then plane past them on the way out and back from the racecourse while the M20 guys are fiddling with outboards, bailing water from the forward compartment and making sure their wallets don't get wet).  If anyone thinks they're short on crew, there are a lot of people in the NY area who have already asked me if I know of skippers who are looking for crew for any of these events...

Anyone have suggestions on where to stay?  Do you have to keep your boat at Charleston Harbor resort?  Are there any other options?  Where do we rig and launch?  Sorry about all the questions.  Thanks!

Don't look now, but we're up to 20 entries from 13 states (Ontario is now the 51st state -- I'm guessing you guys would prefer that vs. annexation by Quebec).  Good stuff.

Lee - the resort will have some decent deals on rooms and there are lots of other lower priced chain hotels nearby in Mt Pleasant.

Most folks rig and trailer launch at a nice public ramp up the river slightly about 10 min by car from the resort.  Great on Thursday, very crowded on Sunday.  Heard rumors of more options this year.  The regatta organizers will get out the details later.

Keep your boat at the resort marina.  That's were the festivities are and the logistics are very good.  Last year Olaf organized a group purchase of a bunch of slips.  Maybe he'll step in again this year as an experienced veteran.  There are free slips at the marina, but be ready for a pretty long walk out to your boat and likely the need to raft with other boats.

Anyone started a list for the Viper Pit so we can own a dock at the Marina?

Let's get that locked in early....Olaf lead the charge last year.

Title: Re: Charleston Race Week -2012. Let's make it the largest Viper attendance ever.
Post by: Matt Sole on January 12, 2012, 06:19:28 PM
There is free dockage but its not that great. Using the many boats in one slip system that has been going on for the past couple of years, it is fairly cheap to dock. Olaf did a stand up job last year of organising what we are calling the the 'Viper pit' also there was a keg scheduled.  It was $100 for the three nights but that did include free beer!

Or was it $100 for beer, with free dockage?? That's only $11 per day per crew for beer when you get to the dock...

According to the CRW site and FB page, you have a few more days before the price goes up. Jan 31st is the  day apparently.

Only 8 more boats needed to eclipse the all time largest viper event!

Yeah, I got an email on the extenstion today from the organizers.  Now it's 1/31, "but I really mean it".
Who knows, but if you are on the fence - commit and sign up - great event.

Watch out that they don't "sell out" and shut down the inshore courses on that date.
Good incentive to register and pay up.  Let the other classes get get whacked by a registration cut-off this year.
Hopefully we get advance notice.

Hey Alec, You're alive!

My favorite part of that story was when he tried to smuggle the 4 foot high inflatable Gosling bottle out of the party. He stuffed it about 2/3rds down his pants with the bottle neck sticking out. The attractive Goslings marketing and PR lady caught him at the exit. The conversation went something like this. Bear in mind that Soley was having focus and vision problems at this stage.

Goslings Lass: "Hey where do you think you are going with that?"
Soley "What?"
Goslings Lass:  "That!", pointing at Soley's crutch where the bottle was sticking out.
In slow motion, soley lookes down at his pants, then looks up at Miss Goslings, desperately trying to focus his vision, then a slow beautificic smile crosses his face and he replies:
"Oh that, I'm just happy to see you"

She let him keep the bottle. Amazing.

Brad,

This is easy to do -- CRW anticipates that people will need to leave their boats places post Mardi Gras / Bacardi Cup / etc.

http://www.charlestonraceweek.com/azalea-moving-and-storage/

Azalea Moving and Storage

Limited free storage is available again for trailerable boats from late January until CRW.  Boats must be fully registered for CRW to take advantage of this offer. A simple Azalea Storage Agreement 2012  is available to so you can provide an ETA and a point of contact. Access to the storage facility is limited to Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm. This lot is relatively secure as it is fenced, locked, and one side of the property borders the Charleston Air Force Base. Size restrictions do apply at this location.  Storage at Azalea for boats over 32′ will be considered on a case by case basis, pending available space. Please do not arrive without first submitting your Azalea Storage Agreement 2012 to [email protected].

Upon arrival, please make sure to check in with one of the warehouse managers. Location: Azalea Moving & Storage 7131 Bryhawke Circle North Charleston, SC 29418 If you're using GPS and your device says you've arrived at Azalea, you're still not quite there.  Stay on the pavement and continue to the right for about a quarter of a mile. This industrial park is a very busy area with tractor trailers constantly transiting through the area. Please drive with caution once you've entered Bryhawke and stay on the pavement – if you're driving on gravel, you're headed in the wrong direction. Directions: From I-26W Take the Ashley Phosphate Road – Exit 209 – towards US-52. 0.3 miles. Take the Ashley Phosphate Road – Exit 209B. 0.1 miles. Turn left onto Ashley Phosphate Road. 1.6 miles. Turn left onto Cross County Rd. 1.2 miles. Turn left onto Bryhawke Circle. 0.1 miles. Turn right to stay on Bryhawke Circle. 0.4 miles. End at 7131 Bryhawke Circle, North Charleston, SC 29418

I just dropped a boat off in Charleston yesterday for storage until CRW.  Charleston City Boatyard is offering storage in an active, well managed fenced and gated boatyard for $50 a month.  A bit more than free, but it's a nice secure place and they have room for lots of boats.

http://www.thecityboatyard.com/  Ed Parker is the service manager there and the guy to talk to.  843-884-3000
It's up the Wando Creek - too far to launch there and a get to Patriot's point by water.

Azalea is great. I have left my boat there between St pete and CRW and between Miami and CRW for 4 years. Its convenient for highway and airport.

If you want to put your sails somewhere away from the boat, last year Jonathan Nye rented a U haul trailer which we used for that .

A lot of Vipers will be convoying up from Miami to Azalea. Join us. Stop for early breakfast at waffle house.

Hey Brad,

We dropped Mambo Kings at Azalia yesterday 0600 am.  Parked next to you. Your boat looks fine, we tipped up the trailer to get most of the green water off your cover.  Azalea wasn't officialy open at that hour so we had to use the keys from Detroit to get in.

Joe Healey was a few hours behind us.

Sarah just registered so we are at 34 VIPERS REGISTERED.

Not sure of his last name but that sounds about right.

So basically Sarah and Jerry bought the Rondar works boats.

Which meant that if Paul and Dan wanted to race, they had to get new boats pretty quick! Well done boys for making it happen, of course Dan does have the back up plan of the mighty Rattler!

Two more new boats sold.
New demo boat on way across Atlantic. Meant to arrive just in time for CRW...which probably means power tools at the dock as the final fittings are installed just before the harbor start.

Can't wait for "Built in North America"

In the meantime, lets find entrants 39 and 40!

I expect to have a new demo boat. Ship is scheduled to land in NY the Thursday before. Only god and Paul Young know what crazy color it might be. Supposed to be the first boat out of the new tooling. Hull # should be 180 AFAIK. Coming with a 5o5 on top to be delivered in MD on the trip south.

Daan Goodkoop picked up his mast on Saturday. I bumped into him in the local hardware store today (unrelated!). Hammering him pretty hard to sign up. He's still on the fence but is tipping. Sic Vinny on him!

If you mean Thursday 12th April, that's tight. If you mean Thursday 19th, that's unrealistic. There is probably at least one LIS boat which might enter if you drove down and handled logistics.

Great if Daan came.

Whoo Hoo! Need just a couple more!

Just talked to the mothership in Wiltshire this afternoon. All the bits are molded (from the new tooling!), parts will be assembled into a new demo boat in the next 2 days.

To make this milestone boat distinctive, and in keeping with the crazy works boats color schemes, the deck is safety orange and the hull is lime green.

Can't wait to see the next works boat (and the next 4+ after that).  In the meantime, the 40th entry just hit the scratch sheet -- congratulations Mr. Tyler Moore of Hampton, VA and Viper 73.

Rum infusion, absolutely! I gotta figure out how to get a keg to the dock for this... Need Olaf's expertise.

This boat needed to be built quickly since we sold all the east coast inventory and works boats. We're currently infusing other stuff in the UK (K1's) but didn't want to rush the first Viper infusion, so it's hand laid & vacuum bagged, as they all have been to date.

That blast from the past was was from CRW 2008, and in 2009 we rose to that challenge and actually got 32 on the line at CRW. I think we're slacking. Can't we get 45 to CRW this year??

2008 NA's were Marblehead NOOD, 24 Vipers actually raced.
2007 NA's were Marblehead NOOD, 17 Vipers actually raced, and we were thrilled.

We've come a long way baby!

I'm getting fired up to push for 60 at the 2012 NA's in Marblehead in September!

Yes, but Opti Team Trials are the following week and his son, along with his Viper co-owner's son, are on the verge of whooping all of us in Vipers in a few years, so that's where that commitment is.  I expect we'll see them on the east coast circuit this summer at a few events and in Western Long Island Sound, plus NAs.

Sunday night. Then meet at Wafflehouse at 2 am for early breakfast.

Zimm has the photo somewhere of Vipers lined up in front of Wafflehouse in the middle of the night in 2009. We owned the place. Andy fell asleep at the table, face down, splat. "No man left behind", so they put him in the back seat. I drove few more miles then hit the local Hampton Inn. Fun ride. It is key to time the DC -NY corridor to avoid the commuter traffic.

Jeebers. I'm having problems booking a restaurant for us all on saturday night.

I tell them 80 to 100 people. They like that. Then when I either mention Vipers or Lee Shuckerow they get all evasive.

Seriously, if anyone with local knowledge has a good idea, send me a pm or email.

I have  highly recommended bar on Sullivan's Island which has a great band playing later, which will give me a bunch of tickets to get in. (Thanks to jamie Ewing for that intro).

Stop Press:

Greg Fisher, Director of Sailing at College of Charleston, winner of 21 NA championships across 7 classes has agreed to co-host (along with our regulars) the post racing debrief and coaching session. It will be great to get his local knowledge and insights on what has been going on across the race course.

Of course, no debrief would be complete without Brad and the ever-youthful Ched ("i'm just reaching my prime") insights. I trust that Brad and Ched are on for this again. The rest of the fleet finds this feedback really useful, and the emphasis at Charleston is going to be about sharing knowledge and pushing tuning and go-fast tips down through out the fleet.

Thanks in anticipation.

The Vipers will be having our debrief and coaching session after racing on Friday. Currently the plan is to hold this in the Atlantic Ballroom at the resort. I will confirm this in the next week or so. This will be a dedicated Viper session led by Greg Fisher from College of Charleston, Brad Boston from Doyle-Boston and Ched Proctor from North.

On Thursday, if you are out practising, North Sails will be out with video cameras and filming all the fleets for a show after the skippers meeting in the pavillion. They will include comments on Viper sail trim and tuning if they get clips. So if you see them filming, sail close.

Luminaries such as Greg Fisher (Director of sailing at College of Charleston), Ched Proctor , Brad Boston, and David"ask an aussie" Chapman  will explain where they went wrong and how come they got beat by a couple of good ole boys from Texas.

Update # 1

Hello Viperers,

This is going out to all the Viper teams registered for Charleston Race Week.  First of all,  congratulations, the Viper Class is the hot fleet and the largest class at the regatta with 41 Vipers signed up and 41 Vipers paid up for our inshore course. This is going to be a great event and we want to make sure that y'all have a good time.

Docking Arrangements
Thanks to the efforts of Jonathan Nye, the Viper fleet has arranged for 5 slips allocated to Vipers near the resort. Each slip can hold 7 Vipers without rafting.  Rondar Raceboats is providing beer on the dock for the Vipers and an award for the best (or worst) decorated bay. Please make sure that you confirmed with Jonathan - see the Charleston Slip thread on the forum. Each slip has a "Bay Coordinator" who is responsible for collecting your docking fee. Free docking for those who registered early is at the far end of the Marina near the Yorktown. It's a 10 minute walk in the opposite direction from the party and the boats may have to be rafted .

Coaching and Debrief Sessions
This year, the Viper fleet is putting a special emphasis on sharing tuning and tactics tips throughout the fleet.
•         Each Viper will receive a "Tips from the Gurus" sheet which will include speed tips from the more experienced Viper sailors and some local knowledge insights from those who have raced at Charleston before. Contributors include; Greg Fisher, Brad Boston, Paul Young, Dave Nickerson, Chuck Allen and Garth Reynolds.
•         On Thursday when you go out to practice, North sails will be out with the video camera and then provide feedback and tuning tips in the pavilion after the skippers briefing. If you see the film crew, sail close!
•         On Friday, after racing, the Viper fleet will be hosting the Viper coaching and debrief session. This will be hosted by
Greg Fisher - Sailing Director of College of Charleston. In addition to his intimate local knowledge of tactics on Charleston Harbor, Greg has won over twenty one North American Championships across seven different classes.
Brad Boston - Sail maker, Olympian and three time North American Viper Champion
Ched Proctor - Sail maker, multiple North American Champion in multiple classes, including three NA championship in 2012 alone.
Please grab your cocktails, head over to the Pavilion and get to meet other Viper sailors and pick up a few speed tips along the way. The debrief will happen shortly after racing is over, around 6.00 pm.

Viper Dinner- Saturday Evening

On Saturday evening, after cocktails at the resort, all Viper teams are invited to get together for dinner at the Water Edge restaurant. www.waters-edge-restaurant.com at Shem's Creek. We have reserved a room for 50 people with a 3 course prix fixe dinner for $33.95. Entrees include; Mahi Mahi, Shrimp and Grits, Grilled Chicken and Prime Rib. Dawn Kozak will be sending out an e-invite shortly and the dining room will be filled on a first-to-respond basis.  Obviously this will be filled quickly . Once the 50 seats are taken, please go ahead and call the restaurant directly to see if you can reserve tables in the main restaurant; 1-843- 884-4074, for the a la carte menu. If you call now, there are still plenty of tables available, but the restaurant will be taking bookings for other parties.
The private room reservation is for 8.00pm. If reserving a table in the main restaurant, try and book a table between 7.30 and 8.30 pm . We will all meet in the Cabana Bar before and after dinner.

Whisky Diablo – Saturday Night

After dinner, come on down to Fiery Ron's Home Team BBQ on Sullivan's Island where our good friend Tony McKie has laid on the Band "Whisky Diablo" for the Viper fleet. Fiery Ron's will be open until 2.00 am with no cover charge for anyone from the Viper fleet.  Fiery Ron's Home Team BBQ, 2209 Middle Street, Sullivans Island is about 10 minutes from Shem's Creek.
Tony writes "Whiskey Diablo is Charleston South Carolina's "dark n dirty" band serving up healthy portions of rock 'n' roll, country, and blues. However, the music isn't limited to these genres. Whiskey Diablo is constantly pushing the envelope by adding in other genres such as jazz, fun and flamenco. This is Charleston's best late night band and the Viper fleet are going to love them"

For anyone who doesn't get a table at Water's Edge, local Viper sailor Jamie Ewing tells us that the Home Team BBQ is one of the best local BBQ spots in the area but seating space is limited and they don't take reservations. It has room for us all in the bar and the terrace where the band is playing.

Crew with the Rondar Team:  There is a great opportunity to sail with the either of the two Rondar works teams. They should contact Paul Zimmerman at [email protected].

Update #2

Hello All,

This is going to be a great regatta with largest fleet on the start line in the history of the regatta. Here are some more last minute logistics.

Brad's "Being Prepared is Everything"
Brad Boston, the Viper North American champion has put together his "To Do" list as he prepares for Charleston and shares it with all of us. See the attached PDF.

Guru "Tip Sheet"
Each Viper team will receive a 2 page laminated sheet of go-fast and tactical tips from the top sailors in the Viper class when you arrive at Charleston. How to keep you boat going fast in light air from Garth Reynolds. How to pimp your ride ready for the big regattas from Keith Magnussen. How to play the shifts by Brad.  How to set up you boat by Ched and Chuck ... and many more.

Debrief and Cocktails Friday Evening
On Friday evening the Viper class will be holding a debrief in the Pavilion at 6.10pm . The Pavilion is to the left of the resort as you look from the water/docks. Bring your cocktails. The coaching session will be chaired by Chuck Allen and hosted by Greg Fisher, Brad Boston, Ched Proctor, Tyler Moore with active participation from all of you.

Dinner on Saturday Evening
Head straight over to the Waters Edge Restaurant on Shem Creek after the presentation by BMW Oracle. We should get there between 7.30 and 7.45pm and meet at the cabana bar. Dawn Kozak has been taking reservations for the  50+ Viper room. Please email her if you have not already reserved a table [email protected] .  If the room is full (probably), then ASAP, call the restaurant directly and reserve a table in the  adjacent space in the main restaurant. 843.884.4074. Do it soon , because restaurants get fully booked over CRW.

Confirm Your Dock Space
Everyone who is expecting a dock space in the five reserved Viper slips (7 boats in each) should send  a blank email with "CRW Berthing" in the subject line to [email protected] . Most already have, but if you haven't, please do.

Any Questions or Problems ???
Please ask them on the Viper – Charleston forum on the class website. That saves us having to answer the same question in a dozen separate emails.  http://forum.viper640.org/index.php?topic=1166.90  If you have any last minute questions or hurdles, don't hesitate to ask. There are lots of Viper sailors ready to help you arrive in Charleston , ready to rumble!

See you there,

Justin  Viper #54 "We are the Mambo Kings"

Some local knowledge from Ward Cromwell - Head Coach at College of Charleston.

Read it and weep.

At the regatta each Viper team will also recieve a laminated 2 sided sheet full of Viper go-fast tips and some tactical ideas from previous winners at CRW.

Please note that the Viper debrief and coaching session on Friday is 6.10 in THE PAVILION, not the Ballroom.

Looking from the docks the pavilion is to the left of resort. If you were sober at Thursday's skippers briefing, you will remember its the same place.

Ok, it's been a week now and I haven't seen a single photo of Bay 3 vs 4, or other Viper frivolity at CRW... Were cameras confiscated by the fun police?  I'd love to see what I missed!
