It is about to get cold and snowy back East, but here in Arizona our winter lawns are just taking seed...
January 15th through the 17th we, at the Arizona Yacht Club, put on our biggest shin-dig of the year. The Birthday Regatta and Leukemia Cup, with this year being our 50th showing.
Last year we had six vippers compete and fleet for the second time at the Birthday Regatta and Leukemia Cup, this year promises to be even larger. Also, there are rumors that we will have other sporties of the same size competing along side of us to make the regatta that much more competitive... oops, only at the start ;)
Friday is a one day regatta, the centerboard challenge. Kind of a warm up race... with prizes. Saturday is the Leukemia Cup and Saturday and Sunday combine for the Birthday Regatta. Last year we had eight great races over the weekend with great wind and weather!
This year on Saturday night, Gary Jobson will be mingling with us as he is a huge Lukemia Society supporter!
If you have question, feel free to ask. If I don't know the answer, I'll find out pretty quick...
And of course besides the racing, this regatta supports a great cause!

It looks like we will have another, and bigger, "Viper Central" again this year with the motor homes.
I'll call him tomorrow to see if we can get a Viper discount...
I am looking to crew on a viper for this event. I really want to sail in this event. I live in NYC but I can make it out there, I have a lot of sportboat experiance. I have sailed the viper before. Can send a sailing resume if needed.
Thanks

is everyone staying at the lake or hotels near the lake? and where? never done this race so where exactly do you set up and launch?

We stayed at a Super 8 down on I think it was Bell road for about $80 night last year.
I blows like stink at the lake all night long. Tried camping there but the friggin tent blew apart...LMAO.
Setup is in the parking lot (see pic bleow) and we'll go out and hit the town one night for SURE. Stacey is gonna cook us all a HUGE dinner ;-)
There's two boat ramps...one gets a bit weedy and the other is easy. This event is pretty large and there's a bit of a line at the end of the day. It's possible you'll need to either motor or get a tow back to the ramp. Day 2, there was great wind in the AM but it petered off to 3-5 in the afternoon. Mornings are best for breeze as it's a thermal wind.
I had an absolute BALL here last year. The club really goes all out to make everyone feel welcome and the parties are great.
I'm hoping we can get Dave Morse/Timbo over too, hopefully Bill from Fresno too. I don't think Doug is making it from Richmond.
We've got some fine talent coming. Glen V has imported Chris Winnard (Ullman Sails - Seattle). Dave Ullman....where are you? Maybe Bruce Cooper from Ullman Newport. We need to work on getting Skip or Harry from the EP loft over.
Just wait for it....the yellow kite may be making an appearance too :-))

I have told Dave that he is going... end of story, no excuses, no debating, no whining... so, Dave, Ken, and I are in for the red boat. We're still working on the blue boat in terms of two boat logistics.... but the red boat is a for sure.

Set up is where Drew showed you near the party tent. The RV trailers are just beyond the boats.
There are two launch ramps, one further to the South of the center of the lake (read further from the start line), both should be busy for this event. The Northern ramp is where I normally launch and it is a 15 minute sail with a breeze. But I do carry a Torqueedo just in case.
Tents are allowed, as Drew mentioned, but it will be chilly at night. We can have 30 degree swings of temperatures out here in January. There will be fires and drinks around to keep you warm, however...
Keep the questions coming, it is always a great event!
Boat deal may say you have a better driver guy.

so the vipers are launching at the north ramp? anyone offering tows to start line? where on the lake are the festivities (south/north ramp)?
If a tow is needed, the Merits, the Cat 22's or one of us with a motor are usually generous... it just depends on your place in the standings ;)
Map of locations attached...

I've launched at both ramps...the South one can be a bit weedy....but is very close.
I'll bring the torqeedo...just in case. I can tow you Glen...Winnard's gotta paddle though :D
Everyone with a VIPER friend should ask them to make this event...it's gonna be a hoot !

thanks for the map, now it's getting clear. i was thinking north and south ends of the lake for the ramps.
and drew, 'squidge' can't paddle....he needs to save his energy for the BOW!
"Squidgy" is on the bow? Does that mean I can drive? ;) ha ha
"Festivities" are closer to the south ramp by the way. Near what we call "Spinnaker Point." It will over look the lake/marina.
Anyone looking to Charter or Crew on a Viper for the AZ Leukemia Cup, please contact me soon.
We may have 1 or 2 boats available for charter. We're working hard to double our number of boats that raced last year....6.
We have boats traveling to Phoenix from San Francisco, LA, Texas, New Mexico. Gotta love the Viper Fleet !!

The Arizona Yacht Club's Birtday Regatta is January 15th through the 17th.
January 16th and 17th only, is our Pacific Coast Championship.
The Lukemia Cup is (obviously) for the cure and is a one day event (with a seperate tax deductable entry fee) awarded from Saturday's results. Don't forget to get some donations. Large enough and you can have a sail with Gary Jobson. A little smaller and you can get a 10% off coupn for a new North sail. Check here http://www.arizonayachtclub.org/TheCalendar/2010/birthday_regatta.shtml and scroll down and Cameron can set up your own fund raising site for you...
Friday is a "fun" race and not included in the PCC's, but trophies (and beer) will be awarded.
I'm using Friday for a tune up day...
So the Leukemia entry would basicly be a contrbution to the cause...
Are you entering the Friday's racing for "tune-up" ?

Exactly, plus more trophies.
Also, if you enter the Lukemia Cup, Fridays race is included at no cost...
i have registered #71 and Laurent has registered #31. It looks like this could be the largest viper event yet on the west coast. Come along - it will be good. Tony C
All right, four boats registered.
It's time for the rest of you to put in... let's make the vippers the largest fleet on the lake!
We've fleeted... keep signing up and let's make the Vipers the dominant fleet for the regatta!
Thanks guys...
Ike V from the Bay Area is possible looking to Charter a Viper. His boat (#10?) is in serious rebuild. He's doing the keel first and the boat is offline.
If anyone knows of a boat for charter, please let me know.
Wonder if Don Z will charter his?
I am looking to crew on a viper for this event. I have a lot of experiance sailing dinghies and sportboats. Anyone have any leads?

Good thing you have a bit of local knowledge on your boat then eh? :D ...one year it was 28 degrees. TWENTY EIGHT. They postponed before anyone went out until it warmed up a bit. Hopefully it doesn't get THAT bitter cold at this next one, though I'd bring an extra layer in case if I were you!

Paid entries of names of Viperers that I know are the following;
Greg Jackson
Drew Harper
Laurent Dion
Tony Chapman
Mark Hinrichs
Glenn Vanheel
Although (or because of) I am the Commodore, I can't acess the report function of our software... probably so I can't bugger it up.
The entry list will become public knowledge at the beginning of the new year. Right now we are the only fleet, but that will definately change as the holidays end and the regatta comes closer.
Everyone except the afore mentioned, sign up already!
I do believe there is at least ONE Viper for charter for this regatta.
Be GREAT to get an East Coast Team heading West to support our fleet growth.

I think we are still waiting for El Paso and Dave Morse (ABYC) to register. That should bring us to 10. The only wildcards out there are Dennis' #72 and Don Z's boat.
Doesn't look like any of the NorCal boats other than us are making the trek. Ike's boat is torn apart...he's doing his keel mod. Bill Chase is working and can't get the time; Doug Kidder is too busy too.

I think #22 is John Porter's uber viper. I'm pretty sure those guys have booked flights and the arrangements are made for the boat transit.
That leaves us with 11 until the mystery guest confirms whether or not he's going to race on Dennis' #72.

Forecast is for rain Wed/Thurs, mid 60's for the weekend and in the 40's at night.
FYI, Thursday night plans are shaping up to be at Papago Brewery: 7107 East McDowell Road, Scottsdale, Arizona 85257
Not sure on exact time yet, probably get there between 6:30-7pm ish. It's the SW corner of Scottsdale/McDowell (a little hole in the wall locals place w/30 brews on tap & bar food/snacks!)
PM me if you are in town for the regatta and need further directions or have any other questions. =}
Early forcast... bring yer clothes for the evening!
Just kidding. That's back East! Here's ours...
I'll take a bit more chill factor if you could get the breeze up a bit... :)
It's official, we are at 10.
See everyone on Friday!

Great sailing Team Big Tex!!! You Ultra and Timbo sailed smart and well.
Thanks to all our Arizona Viperers for hosting a wonderful regatta. Beautiful venue and wonderful people.
My jury is still out on the 0900 start time.

Ha ha ha. We gotcha Timbo, we gotcha! Thanks to out of town folks who made the trek over, it was great fun and a pleasure to host you all!
Go the Squidge!
Fun event ... good sailing (challenging conditions in the afternoon) and a great party! Having a bar set up after we got off the water Friday was a nice touch.
Word of warning for next year - if there's a viper sailor pouring drinks better beware. That was one GREAT party!
Good sailing with you Timmy, big thanks to Phil for having me on the boat.
A few low-res teaser pics taken by Chrisann from our boat... we'll have the hi-res pics on picasa hopefully tonight!
Sunday's regatta leader with the yellow kite and the eventual winner...
Thanks to everyone for coming out!
