So only 3 days of racing? I thought it was 4, plus practice day......need to change schedule a little bit.
Really should be four days. I would personally like 2 days of racing, layday, 2 days of racing, lots of fun.
I hope that someone has located the closest Kart track.

Any comment from the organizers on the typical breeze that time of year??

Bump.... :)
It should be a breeze on regatta....Now that I said that it will be the oposite but the reason for having it at this time of year was for the 15++.

Knock on wood!
Planning is going great for the event. We have less than two months to go before we start racing. Is there anything I can do to help people get organized?
If you are planning on flying in I would recommend Detroit Airport or Flint MI. These are both about an hour away on the Michigan side and are the cheapest and easiest to fly into. If there are enough people flying in around the same time we might try and send the Doyle Van to pick people up. (try our best).

Any cottages or house for rent in the area?
Might be interested in housing up with a boat or two and spliting a house/cottage. Some times less costly than hotels.
Thanks for doing all this work, Brad.
Go to tourismsarnialambton.com and there is a listing of everything available around Sarnia. I will also ask around for you.
Brad
Craig,
Here a few cottages. We are also looking into some other ideas.

This is an apartment building right at the club. It says they have some available as "cottage"

I had no idea Lake Huron water was so blue. And beach cottages here are super-cool. Here's the view from the porch, but the picture doesn't capture the color well. The brown water in the foreground is where you can see the sandy bottom, beyond that all blue.
Email below from Sarah at Gowrie. If you don't already have insurance for your Viper, you need to talk with these guys right away!
Dear Viper Class:
I manage the One-Design Insurance Program at Gowrie Group and currently insure many Viper 640 sailors.
I am excited to offer two ways that your class and its members can take advantage of our One-Design Insurance Program.
1) Custom insurance for your championship: I have created an insurance flyer which is specific to your upcoming championship regatta. It details our insurance benefits and the pricing for both an annual insurance policy and event-only insurance. One very important benefit is that our insurance program includes $300,000 of third party liability insurance, with the option to purchase up to $2million in coverage. Most NOR?s require sailors to have this.
2) Purchase insurance instantly from our website at www.gowrie.com/onedesignquote.
Some highlights on how our One-Design Insurance Program benefits sailors:
Cost is based on where you use your boat ? Sailors staying local are given a significant price break
Endorsed by US SAILING ? Members eligible for a 10% discount
Thousands of sailors in the program ? All types, from club racers to Olympic champions
Third party liability of $300,000 included ? Many US regattas, marinas, and clubs require proof of this
Up to $2mil in third party liability available ? In today?s litigious world, many sailors want and need this
Worldwide coverage is available ? Most insurance for small boats does not cover worldwide use
Racing is covered ? Many insurance policies exclude racing
Charter insurance options available ? Most insurance policies exclude charters
Claims managed by Gowrie?s marine experts ? Claims paid quickly, Gowrie Group is your advocate
Instant online purchasing ? Buy online anytime of day with a credit card
If you have any questions about the One-Design Insurance program please contact me. Good luck with your championship!

Yes, it's not just you. It was a problem with Internet Explorer not agreeing with MS Word on proper HTML. Go figure. It worked fine in Firefox and Chrome.
Anyway, it's fixed now, so give it another look - it has pictures of your boat in it. (And thanks for the heads up)
I should have a sample of the shirts at the end of the week for everyone to see. This is going to be a good time, does anyone have questions aboout the venue or regatta?

Sorry to say 55 won't be able to make it to the NA's. Short season for us, hoping for a better 2012. Will be glad to crew if someone needs me.

Holiday Inn and Best Western are the two closest, and both look pretty decent. As I recall, they are almost next door to each other. I would go for one of those as first choice. The Chipican is also a great location and looked good from the outside, but we didn't go in and there are some odd reviews on Tripadvisor.

Bid up to $65 for these on priceline and got rejected, but will keep trying in 24 hrs. Stay tuned.
Chipican is quoting USD$130ish on their site, though I see $54/double on hotels.com
Harbourfront Inn is CAD$90 with AAA. "Sarnia's Only Waterfront Accommodation". Looks decent, on Sarnia Harbor, 1.3mi from the SYC as the crow flies.
http://www.sarniaharbourfront.com/
Made a reservation there for now, $101.70 with tax for double, and no charge for a roll-a-bed.

Did you go for the "Romance Package" ?
You got to be fair desperate for testimonials when you quote an "Essex Lad" . I'll leave Matt to explain.
In the NOR you will see that there are blocks of rooms at the Harbour front and Best western. They are within a 30 seconds from eachother. The Harbour front is next to two great pubs that are in the same parking lot. If it was me I would be there so we would not need to drive or walk at the end of the night.
We do have a bunch of boats available for people to stay in if needed. They are not flash but will keep you dry and there are toilets and showers all over the club. This will be good for teams needing to save money. You can also tent if needed but I would stay in a 30' boat over that.
Brad
Some people stayed at the Chippican last week during the S2's and the crew was none to happy about it. I believe he was worried about the "hourly" attendants if you know what I mean :)
The Holliday Inn is also next to the others but I was unable to get any deal. It does have an indoor pool and fittness center.

Heh! Anyone want to stay and play a round on Sunday?
So indeed, there are rooms blocked at the Harbour Front Inn for the Vipers, $90/room, free roll-a-bed, continental breakfast incl. They've got them for Sep 27- Oct. 1
Just remember that there are some cheaper Motels on London line in sarnia but you need to drive 10-15 minutes to get there. That is why I blocked the close Hotels. Easier to drink and not drive... tourismsarnialambton.com
Also remember that we do have some boats for people to stay on if needed.
Bit confusion on the block booking. Called the Harbor Front and she said $100 per night +tax for Vipers, but she confessed she was a new there. Regular rate is $104 so didnt seem much of a saving and I thought I'd play the price line game for a bit. Better to book with AAA
Best Western is $105 (regular rate $129).
Say you are with Viper North Americans.
Okay. Called back Harbor Front. Our Viper NA room rate is now $85 per room.
We're booked in there. See you soon.

We're up to 21 boats registered? Who else is planning to join? Can we get to 30 boats?
If anyone is looking for crew at this event, my friend Mark Shannon has asked me to say that he's available. He's a good sailor and has crewed for us a bunch of times, so he knows his way around a Viper. Plus he grew up sailing in Sarnia, so he knows where the current is and will make sure you don't get sucked under the Bluewater bridge. contact him at tripp26zoomATgmail.com.

Last I heard the Tucker was looking for a third.
Point out mark when get to Sarnia, and we'll buy him lots of drinks and wave him across on port.
Anyone looking for crew should talk to me, Brad or Lee. There are a bunch of people around here who have spent a lot of time on my boat or Jackpot and would love to sail.
Edit: Wasn't trying to override getting Mark on a boat. Anyone who needs crew if Mark is already sailing should let us know.
GBR 123 just had a training session
at our local watering hole... (pub/bar)
we are looking forward to the racing.
hope to see 30+ boats
p.s is Barry Parkin coming?
Not sure if Barry can make it or not. I will call him and see. We are really glad to see you guy's making the trip.
I wish more would travel here, they really are going to miss a great sailing venue...
Today it is 85 out with water at 74 degrees.

Long range forecast of 60's and upper 40's....for race week. That should get me primed for our Winter Series in NC. Unless I messed up the C/F conversion.... I bet those Texas guys are looking forward to some cool temps!
Team jackpot just landed in Houston, tx and I don't know how these guys do it. It is freaking hot. Can't wait to get back to Detroit for North Americans.
I.V. Bud Light........ apply till the forehead sweat stops
but what do we IV to stay warm in Canada ?
& is the curling club open yet ? or is that a year round gig ?
lee - tell brad not to spend any of the EFG party funds until we all get to Sarnia. having just mailed out the check this is one party i will not be missing. not sure when the party is but i hope we are not expected to sail the next day.
I have a couple of Houses and boats left if anyone would like to save Money. Please let me know if you need these.
Brad
brad - just checking you have set aside space for my crew mike and luce. see u next week. tony
Yes, All set.
I also have a real good deal on a house walking distance to YC if anyone needs. With some last minute crew switches it was just me staying there so I moved myself over to harbour front.
(Two of us hoping to get a little twilight golf in at holiday inn late wed afternoon if anyone else interested).
Thanks to some hard working volunteers at the club the new docks are in and ready to go for the Vipers. We have room for everyone to have their own spot on the dock and extra space if any other Vipers want to make a last minute trip to Sarnia for the regatta. Looking forward to seeing everyone next week.

Still no real information on this wedding on the forums. + I dont see the time and place on the NOR. Can anyone help with info?
On the regatta website there is a Amendment to the NOR :
Notice of Race
NOR Amendment #1
However when clicking on "NOR Amendment #1" nothing comes up. Can that be fixed?
Thank you
Craig
We will fix it. All it says is the Skippers Meeting is at 8pm Wed 28th.
Is this like when we'd do a college regatta in the midwest and they'd schedule the "competitor's meeting" for 9pm on Friday night at a frat house? This was a wily practice of signaling to everyone else that there was a party afoot since you otherwise weren't allowed to advertise a party in connection with a college regatta...
Almost ten boats are already in the boatyard of sarnia yacht club and it's a gorgeous sunny day in the mid seventies. Things are looking good.
All boats are here and ready to go...should be 10-15 out of the south tomorrow with flat water. The rc will do their best to update mark Roundings and scores on the yacht scoring and the doyleboston Facebook page. Friday could bring the big wind and waves out of the north.
The forecast looks BIG...
http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/marine/forecast_e.html?mapID=10&siteID=07605
Extended Forecast
Issued 06:30 PM EDT 28 September 2011
Friday- Wind southwest 15 knots increasing to north 35 in the morning.
Saturday- Wind north 30 knots.
Sunday- Wind north 20 knots diminishing to light late in the day.
That's nothing. Canadian knots are like kilometres, right? So 30-35 "knots" is like 15-20? Here's hoping. Sail fast everyone.
Bring it
Animal
Good luck to all competing in Sarnia. Looks like you will have a chilly but windy regatta. Have fun and bring back lots of stories. Looking forward to seeing the hard core guys in HPDO!
Saturday Forecast: Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
Overcast. High of 50?F. Unseasonably cool. Winds from the North at 20 mph. Chance of rain 20%.
Saturday Night Overcast. Low of 39?F. Winds from the North at 10 mph.
Meanwhile...down south in Smogtown for our little own BBVA:
Saturday: Forecast Mucha Mo' Betta:
Mostly sunny. Highs in the lower 80s. Northeast winds 10 to 15 mph.
Saturday Night
Mostly clear. Lows in the mid 60s.
Looks like is going to be a GREAT BREEZE ON! event... kicking myself in the arse for not quitting my job and doing a border crossing...
Sail fast everybody.... put up results daily, as soon as possible....
Results through race 4 are currently posted, and according to the Doyle Boston Facebook page, they're running race 5 right now.
http://www.yachtscoring.com/event_results_cumulative.cfm?eID=468
Thanks Peter.... Got some friends in the top group... :)
5 races completed in day 1.... sheet, them's be some short courses.
From the timing of the Facebook posts, I'm going to guess that each race was 45-50 minutes at most, but it looks like they may be done for the day, so I'm sure we'll have first hand reports up here soon enough to confirm or deny that. Could also be an effort to crank out a lot of races in case it blows 30-35+ kts tomorrow and they decide it's not sailable (though I'm sure someone will chime in and tell me that is totally sailable in a Viper, etc.).
Naaa, who would say that.... ;)
Good racing today...we got 5 really good races off today in 8-16 knots. 50 minute races to make sure we are covered just in case tomorrow is an issue. I think we should be good to race in 20-25 with big waves. Looks like everyone is having a good time.
Brad
I think the coolers full of booze and beer on top of five good races isnt hurting so far. When it gets chilly just drink kore rhum and you will be fine.
Yeah I said rhum. It's a French canadian rum.
Small fleet but all super high quality sailors there.
Nice to see old man Scott on top, I am sure Brad and Glyn will be looking to knock him off pretty quick.
Also fun to see 3 of the top 5 are Brits!!! Wohoo!
Can we break the Friday Cone of Silence? Anyone sailing today? How big are the waves already?
got one race in b4 the blow, good fun, first time sailed one of these things over 20knots,
was close at the first top mark, but Brad sailed away from us then Jeff Jones in 3rd.
Justin recovered to 4th after a quick swim
I'll try put my video on the doyle boston facebook page
Nice to see old man Scott on top, I am sure Brad and Glyn will be looking to knock him off pretty quick.
Seems to me you forgot about us Texas boys!
Saturday morning. Blowing steady 20.8 knots at end of floating docks where we all been tying up at. The floating docks are skewed a bit from the breeze. The Ultimate 20 that was in dry storage in the lot next to us blew off it's trailer and is now on it's side. No damage seen to any Vipers in dry storage.
We found a 24 or 30 inch orange life ring floating against the floating docks. We pulled the life ring out of the water and placed it near barrell area near the boat ramp, as well as a kayak paddle in case any SYC members are looking for those items.
Craig and Deborah
Sailflow is showing solid low 20's all day at the coast, 30ish +/- as the south bay buoy, and 10-15 at the airport. Hope that gradient is consistent off Sarnia, would love another crack at a race like yesterday!
Having a blast. 2 thumbs up, Brad and co.
It's a bad day when you wake up to find you ultimate 20 has fallen off it's trailer and crushed your laser that was nicely placed next to it.
Other than that the NAs went pretty well and the competition level was huge. Going into the final race three boats tied for first with fer de lance only a few points back. Team jackpot had a great time hosting this years NAs and hope everyone enjoyed it as much. Thanks for coming and see you at HPDO
Did anyone take any on the water pics over the weekend? Did Brandy Boston take any? I imagine they'll eventually hit phanfare if she did.
What happened to Saturdays results on yacht scoring???
We need to know!!
Blew 30 with really big waves. Racing was called off. There is a huge low pressure system here right now that has created 30 plus wind from the north for three days.
I hope everyone had fun...we did the best job we could getting six perfectly run races in.
Brad
Hey Brad, hats off man, 'twas a great few days, just as promised. Granted, we can't control the weather, but there was plenty of good sailing anyhow, and no shortage of quality partying to make up the difference. Thanks again!
+1 for Olaf's post. Everything was perfect for us.. well, you can control the weather but it did get me in home on time to mow my grass today.
Brad and the rest of the volunteers; you guys rock. We are SO glad we made the trip up!!!!!
Met a lot of really cool new people, and olaf (kidding Olaf, you're a good dude) ;-) Email me Monday on your bunks.
Wish we could make the HDPO.

Damn, I see why the "young guys" at the bar were callin me "grey beard". Nice pic. It sums up our weekend. Maybe I'm not as young as I feel........certainly not as young as I act.................. Seriously, Brad and the whole Boston "clan" went above and beyond to make this event an unbelievable family affair. So what if the weather wouldn't cooperate. We just took the party to the sail loft! I can't imaginge a better group of people to race with/against. THANK YOU. This really was what I feel the Viper community should be about! Great racing, excellent competition, and truly, a friendly boat race. That is what it is all about! Perhaps it was a slick covert ad campaign for Doyle Boston sails..if so, it worked. I will always suppport them, they are what we call in Texas "good people".
Perhaps I'll hang up the tiller and swear my allegiance to the "animal". I can't argue with the results. We laughed, drank, (didn't puke for once), and did way better than (at least I) expected! I can't wait to race again. I just gotta get this annoying job/life thing out of the way.
Once again, THANK YOU to the Bostons and Sarnia

Drake pegged it. "this i really what i feel the viper community should be about".
Here's the only "bad" picture i took of the boston party on Friday. Got one race in - every day when we got off the water there were a few bottles of rum and a lot of beer waiting for us at the dock. Noon at the dock, 1:00 at the loft.... 5:00 PM at the "gennnnaua (as Justin would put it) 50 we were staying on and then dinner.
Epic.
Arnold said this was one of the funnest regattas he's been to. I have to agree. Sometimes, it's just about the company.
good times.
Drake - guess we need to get that animal / monkey kite? Youre welcome to drive... between races that is ;-) Kidding.

Excellent Regatta, thanks to ALL the Boston's for everything. I'm glad I made the trip and look forward to going back and racing in that area again. I think I met more Viper crew at this regatta than I have in two years of doing this.
Bill Abbott and the rest of the RC did a great job. Can you believe we got Black Flagged on a Practice Day?

I only had the camera on the last day. As you may have noticed, we were a little preoccupied pre start (I hear battens and mainsails are helpful), and obviously I was a little busy during the race, so unfortunately not too many pics (Jones did try to stick it down his pants and take a crotch shot though)
I tried to click on the phanfare link, but nothing showed up. I would love to see the video
Hey Everyone,
On Thursday I did get a few shots while out there. Not a whole lot but at least some. I blew some of the ones up that are far away and they look pretty good.

Thanks again to everyone for coming up to sail!

Once again, THANK YOU to the Bostons and Sarnia
db
+1 Great regatta. It what Vipers are about.
Sorry I didnt get to say good bye to the Chicago boat. Great bunch. They chartered and jumped in the deep end with this bunch of renegades. They were really getting the hang of it by race 5. Enjoyed chatting to them over breakfast. We should organize a demo and coaching session at Chicago Corinthian.
The take away for this East Coast Viper sailor is that we should do more sailing and parties on the Great Lakes.
Drake...the beard wasn't grey before you went into the Riverport Tavern. It aged you man.
I just wanted to drop a quick note and say thanks to everyone in Sarnia and the Viper fleet as a whole. Team Milwaukee (aka - Widespread Panic...the boat name was fitting on Friday) had a great time at our first Viper regatta, at least during the parts we can remember!
I have been in many fleets over the years and it was great to see how friendly and helpful everyone was as we figured out the new boat. I can't wait to get back out on the water!
Tom
Wanted to let everyone know I was down at the club taking the boat out of the water and it was sunny 70 degrees and blowing 10-15knots out on the water.
Also we found some items people may be missing
Dave furna we have your big orange bumper. Always good to put your name on things.
We found two other fenders with no name on them
And we found a piece for a trailer jack for the european trailer that holds the trailer jack on.
brad i think i may have left my round white offendors.. you know, you used one to hold my mast up for the 1000 mile drive up?

Wondered what happened to that thing......maybe you can bring it to New Orleans, if not, I'll take one from Jeff..
When do we get to see the video?. And oh yeah, pictures or it didn't happen...........
The Trailer Jack thingy may be #99's.
The N.A.'s were absolutley awesome. The Boston's, race committe, SYC staff and anyone I forget to specifically mention, all did an excellent job and were very accomodating and friendly. It was great putting faces to names and meeting sailors that are as passionate about the sport as Craig and I are. Being from an area that has no vipers for us sail against (though we are trying!), participating in regattas like this enables us to learn, improve and have fun.
Thank you to a great class, great hosts and a great group of sailors ....
Deborah

Woah Texas! I was talking about fenders......
I think that Trailer jack Thingy belongs to #99, the nice folks from Chicago. During that wind that blew in at night, #99 fell off it's European Jack, the jack had opened, so I am guessing that belongs to them.

This is the part I lost. It holds the wheel on the trailer. I need to return this to John Strauss whom I chartered the boat from.

I thought the article that you wrote for the N.A's was great. Fun, accurate and reflected the esprit de corps that embodies/defines the Viper class.
It would be nice if you submitted it for the Sailing Anarchy front page (yeah some of us still look at the front page...........it is good publicity)
The amount of coverage the M24 championships got was crazy, multiple articles that went on ad nauseum about how cool the boat/class is. It would be nice to see us (the Viper class) get at least mention. I realize Clean is a Melges lover, but hell, Rondar sponsors the Sport Boat forum and give them money. They ought to at least give us some mention?
Drake,
Clean has given the vipers their fair shake in the past, so definitely a good idea to throw it up on the SA home page. However, be forewarned that some naysayers may chime in about only getting 21 boats, I think a thread already started on that. Looks like the level of competition at the top was good enough to prove everyone wrong. There's already 30 lined up for the HPOD this weekend and that regatta will probably get more coverage than NA's did. Looking forward to 2013 in Houston where we better have 50 on the line, so no excuses for a media fallout!
-Brian
Hey Brian,
Im looking forward to Houston in 2013. It'll be a hoot and we have some good publicity ideas ahead of it.
Don't forget to drop in on Marblehead for 2012 NAs, on your way to Houston.
Ian Nicholson from the Brit team has emailed me saying that Yachts and yachting + Sail world might pick up the article. PLEASE if anyone has ANY PICS, please send them to me or to Tucker so that they can be embedded in the article. A pic is worth a thousand words.
Oh and I just heard from Harvey, he has been editing his video and any moment,we will have a video of the event embedded on the web site. Cool.
There is another unofficial version which includes my cartwheel in the last race. This version is available at $1,250 (checks to class association) from Harvey.
The NAs has made it to Yachts and Yachting in the UK. Thanks to Bro Nicholson.

Hey Dave that last run was pretty awesome. We did have a speed and were sailing pretty deep. We held a pretty steady 15knots most of the way with a few shots into the upper 16s pow 17s. We were watching you guys had her turned up going for speed and had to be a least several knots faster than us on that last run. Have a good one.
