Icing the kegs down now...!

Actually, this Fri-Sun is PHRF NE's, so no Vipering, but I'm sailing on a Hendo and it's gonna be an interesting weekend.  Already assuming Sunday will be blown out...

But anyway, anyone got experience with "hurricane-ifying" a Viper on a trailer?  Should I just strap her down to the trailer?  Okay to leave rig up?  Taking everything off the boat, no cover, stern plug out...

I would take the rig down and put that very expensive carbon mast somewhere safe, mine's in the garage. Then I strip the hull clean and strap it on the trailer and tie the trailer to something. Ounce of prevention!

Live to race another day....OR just sail it to Block Island, set the kite and record your top speed heading back home.

I'm in for $100 if he breaks Timbos 23.2  :-))

What's the downwind polar target for a 90 knt southerly?

For those in the area, there's a hurricane party Friday at BostonYC in Marblehead, to drink all the booze and give away all  the swag for the cancelled Hanse PHRF NE's.  Prize awarded evidently.  6-9.  Free admission, drinks a couple bucks I think.

Damn... I hate passing up a good challenge.

I'm sure we could pull that off in Boston Harbor without ending up dead, but the boat might suffer a bit more than my insurance will cover!

we're de-rigging ours tomorrow and trailering it to PVD where we can store it inside...

how much wind was there for that anyway?  I can't wait to get a speed-o just for curiosity sake.

So are you Easty boys droping your masts and tying down the boats and trailers?
I would take my Viper home and put it in the barn.
Not only is the hull going to see lift-off wind speeds,  there will be a lot of crap flying loose that could do major damage.

Just a thought.

yeah, mast down and everything tied up.  Not sure where we can put it to keep away from debris, but it won't be under and trees if we can help it.  We're going to leave the cover off I think to save the cover, anything big enough to damage the boat would do it through the cover anyway, and at 60+ wind speeds the cover would probably shred anyway?  IE Less windage.

No... not yet.  We Easties (me at least...) have been suckered before when it comes to hurricanes and blizzards.

I think the reality is:  a) media hype, b) once this storm hits land and moves north into cooler water, winds will slow substantially.   It'll rain a sh-t-ton, but I'm betting on winds gusting to 65 maybe, in Marblehead at least.  As it is, the storm is only clocking at 110 now, and that's only near the eye wall.  LIS and Newport are a little more potluck.  Bottom line, I'm holding out until Saturday eve or Sunday AM to make my call.

The real danger from this storm is in the torrential rain that's going to be dumped on NYC and the likes, meaning flooding, especially subways and utility infrastructure.  Boston will have issues like that too most likely, but the boat yard will just fine in that regard.

55 is secure in a steel building. Worth the extra effort. We are expecting a 8ft surge and 100mph winds here, could be interesing......

Irene turned West a few degrees at 3.00 an this morning which means she is heading straight for Oriental and #55. Seems she jest made landfall at Harkers Island.

Dave......hope all is well with you. Let us know how you fare.

At the moment Greenwich CT and LIS looks more in harms way than Marblehead so Im down here taping up windows, filling the bath tub, trying to find some place to tie down the stupid kids trampolene (why do I still have that thing?).

I need some help for Peaches Point.

I'm not going to get too carried away up here unless there's a significant change.  Looks like it's heading way west of Boston and it's going to blow out.  I'm betting on winds maybe gusting to 65 in Mhead worst case (big deal).  I think I'm just going to strap the boat onto the trailer and leave it at that.

We left the mast up on our Viper, and tied the boat to the trailer. I hope it is ok.

However, I live in Waterbury, VT, right next to the Winooski river, and we had much worse flooding than in May. This time, the water crested the berm in our backyard and kept climbing. We left our house at 8:00 with the water starting to come up from under the floorboards. We stayed the night at a friends house, walking there with an escort from the fire dept. We moved our cars but not far enough. When I came back today, the water had receded, and the high water mark was about three feet up in our apartment. My stereo, xbox, appletv, blu-ray were all under water, and two couches and a mattress got ruined, not to mention books, keepsakes, and all sorts of other stuff. I moved everything to handle about a foot of water, but it was so much worse than we expected. I should have done more. Oh, our cars were also totally flooded, and will probably get totaled. Not a great night. I think Wednesday night racing will be the first time I get to clear my head this week. On a good note, my fianc? saved her wedding dress.

I hope no one else had it worse.

Cheers,

jason

I left #28 at dock on Lake George, facing NE with a 16lb claw anchor and 20 ft of chain and 100ft of 1/2 inch line.  I baby sat her a bit.  No problems with 4ft waves coming into my bay.  I hear early estimates of 100 or so boats sunk on LG.   What a difference a day makes.  Winds 5-8 out of NW and harly a cloud in the sky.

Damn Jason - we're all very sorry to hear this!  Glad you're all personally safe, but it sounds like you have a lot of "stuff" to deal with now, right when you don't need it.

^ +1. :(  Sorry about your losses.

We still don't have power, massive tree loss onto power lines in our neighborhood, but out of the hundreds of trees down (thousands even?) I've only seen ONE on a house, and the house was fine, so we're very lucky down here.  We've got water and gas hot water so all we lost was the food in our fridge.  Tuesday night was a nice way to get out of the house though.

Our part of CT lost vast sections of power. Jackie only got power back yesterday.

I was fine. Only thing missing is the 15' diameter Kids trampolene and the maple tree that I tied it to.
Jason, if it turns up in Vermont, let me know.
Sorry to hear about the flooding.

I confess that I couldn't help visualize the scene as you walked. She sees the wedding dress is safe. he sees the drowned X box and i stereo+ ipod and 10 years of saved music.

Simultaneously
She: "Oh thank god"
He; " Oh Shit"
Pause
He : " I mean, yeah right, thank god"

LOL!

The wedding dress came with us (in a garbage bag) when we walked to a friend's house in knee deep water. We had moved my entertainment electronics to the two-steps-up kitchen, and there was still hope when we left. But when the house we went to turned into an island and the water filled the basement and then another 12 inches, I knew that stuff was underwater by then. The biggest surprise was seeing how bad our cars got it even though we brought them to slightly higher ground.

I'll miss my turbo WRX? I replaced it with a more tame Impreza Outback Sport in Viper red, which gets better mileage and takes regular gas.

I'll drop some photos of the mess.

Cheers,
