Hi there,
I've just bought an old Viper here in the UK, it's completely bare so I'd love some help on how to rig it all correctly. If anyone has a photo of there boat and are able to lable which ropes go where? Also the pole appears to have a line coming out of the bottom to go to a U bolt, does this just go straight through the pole onto the kite? the boat has a Ali rig, so if anyone has got a basic rig settings guide (rake and rig tension) that would be a great help.
Can't wait to get her going and have a play.

Cheers all

Duncan

The tack line should run from the u bolt into the pole, once inside there should be  a block that it runs through.  It then exits through the other hole in the end of the pole and ties to the sail.  There should be a length of shock cord attached to the block and it should run out the cockpit end of the pole where it runs through a block tied to the mast step and back forward to a strap eye where it terminates under deck.  The shock cord retracts the tack line as well as the pole.  Check out reference photos from the aps website for a start http://www.apsltd.com/c-3372-viper-640-boat-photos-for-reference.aspx and ask away as needed.

Where in Cornwall are you? Good chance I will be down there in December.

Hi there,

I'm based just outside Falmouth, Would be great if you are this way, I think we are going to need a lot of help to get this boat looking and working right.

Thanks for the help so far.
Our boat doesn;t seem to have the spinnaker turning block out on the edge of the hull, like have seen in many photo's. i believe it is just a case of drilling two holes sealing them and adding some Spectra to secure the block, but I have no measurements on where these turning blocks go. If anyone knows the distance from the transom corner forward that would be great. Our boat has the old style chain plates which look more inboard so it could be difficult taking a measurement from there.
Also under the fore deck there seems to a purchase system (block and tackle) which is controlable from both sides under the foredeck, I'm not sure what this is for, maybe a fine tune on the jib halyard, but there are two free blocks so i'm not sure?

Thanks

Duncan

" 6.5  The aft spinnaker sheet blocks must be attached to the gunwale 200cm forward from the corner of the gunwale and the transom."  This from the rules at <http://www.viper640.org/class-assoc/class-rules>

The double-ended block system under the foredeck is for a jib fine tune.  On new boats the jib halyard exits from the bottom of the mast on the port side, then through a turning block and out about  a foot to another turning block, then up to where it goes through the deck.   In the foot between the two fixed blocks, it should pass through the floating block for the fine tune.

good luck with your new boat--cheers, Matt CAN 70

Thanks Matt.
Just found the class rules a lot has just become clear.
Is there a running rigging guide any where with lengths, halyards, sheets etc?
also, any idea of any base setting to get me going, mast rake and rig tension for an ali rig is all i really need to get started.
I think we might just throw the sails up and have a play this weekend and see what breaks then start the work properly.

Cheers

Haha, thats not my boat, mine is a trainwreck.  It took an entire season to keep the water outside.

Hey, that sounds familiar...  but it won't leak next year, right? :-)

You keeping the boat up at Restroguet?

I will be visiting Falmouth in december or January depending on my work schedule.

I can help you get stuff set up.

Where did the boat come from?

Hi Soley,

The boat is actually being kept on "New Quay" the first yard at mylor on the left. (I have an rs400 at restronguet tho).

Any help would be great, we got the boat from Cardiff Yacht Club, they had been using it for teaching but really it just got a bit of a hammering. Think we are going to have a sail today to see what else breaks then start fixing it up for real.

Wish me luck, 18knts of breeze, first sail in one of these and i gather they are hand full with the small keel, should be interesting!!!

Sounds a bit like my first sail. We went out with no intention of putting the kite up but after half an hour of upwind. We had a long slow ride back so up it went and WOHOOOOO!!!

I would be very surprised if you had any problems sailing the boat since you already have an RS400.

Trying to persuade one of my friends to import one from the US. Has a GK24 called Sidewinder. He gets all excited about 10.4 kts before broaching!

Hi Duncan--this thread isn't all up to date but it might give you some base lengths for the rigging.

cheers, Matt.
