Australia

Written by Jon Stubbs

The Viper has arrived downunder.

A local Perth sailor, Rod Beurteaux, started the Australian Viper fleet. After a lifetime of dinghy sailing Rod moved into small keelboats.

Shortly after that he decided life is too short??.Sail fast boats!

Rod literally, travelled through three continents combining boring business trips with a search for the best 20? sport boat.

He was looking for a boat that was:

    * Strict one design
    * Exciting to sail
    * Simple to rig and sail
    * Had a reputable builder
    * Was reasonably priced

Only the Viper 640 ticked all the boxes.

Four boats were imported in 2009 and a local fleet was established on the Swan River, Western Australia. The Viper has proved ideally suited to Australian conditions.

Since then, the Vipers have been club racing successfully in Division One at Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club and East Fremantle Yacht Club.

At Geographe Bay Race Week, 2010, the Vipers competed successfully in a 15 boat sports boat fleet including the larger Melges 24?s. The Viper has a really competitive rating on the Australian Sportsboat Measuring system. The fleet included Chris Williams, 5 times National Sports Boat Champion. The Vipers and Melges dominated racing, winning five races each.

Events

With the fantastic downwind rides, everybody comes in with a smile on their face regardless of finishing position, everybody?s got a story,

Viper sailing brings back that original joy you had in sailing as a kid.

West Australian events include:

    * Saturday and Sunday club racing
    * West Australian Sports Boat Short Course Regatta. (November and April)
    * Geographe Bay Race Week

Australian events may include:

    * Audi Geelong Race Week
    * Meridien Airlie Beach Race Week
    * Australian Sports Boat Championships

The Future

As a group we are actively seeking to grow the Australian fleet, East coast and West coast, both in boat owners and crew.

We welcome any interested sailors to go sailing with us.

Airfares are cheap now. If you?re on the East coast join us for a weekend and there is a great sail and a D&S waiting for you. Shout yourself to a sail on the hottest boat in the country.

Contact Jon or Rod for information on the class.

    * Information on importation of boats
    * second hand boats
    * test sails
    * join us for a race
    * see what all the buzz is about.
