2016 WLIS Racing
« on: May 05, 2016, 09:52:20 AM »
Greetings Viper Race Fans,

Welcome to the 2016 Season.  Lots of racing on tap and it should be a good one.  We have a couple of new boats at Noroton, a brand new club-sanctioned fleet at Nyack Boat Club, and several owners who were not super active in 2015 who are talking about more racing in 2016.

1. The Schedule is attached - YRA SIs, LYC Supplement to the schedule so that you know what days actually count toward the LYC season championship (which also includes the WLIS Championship Circuit).  This does not include the Stamford/Noroton race calendar, or the Nyack Calendar -- each of those fleets will be racing on Sundays.

2. In order to do any of the racing, at least at Larchmont, make sure you are a YRA member.  Costs $50.  Sign up at http://yralis.org/memberships

3. Registration is open for the first two regattas of the season, both of which count toward the WLIS Championship Circuit - please note that we will NOT be running the Sportboat Grand Prix May 21-22.
a. May 28-29 LYC Memorial Day: http://www.larchmontyc.org/Yachting/Regatta_Schedule/2016_Memorial_Day.aspx
b. June 4-5: Noroton Viper Open: http://www.regattanetwork.com/event/12585

If anyone has any questions about the season, needs crew, wants to crew, wants to get a boat, etc., just let me know.

The Circuit results through YRALIS Champs are posted.  Two more events to go - Stamford Viper Open Sept. 17-18, and HPDO Oct. 8-9.

HPDO ended the season.  While we had Team Horowitz leading much of the year, a paperwork glitch where Zeke managed to not be an LYC summer member once he moved to Annapolis and also failed to pay the $30 to join the YRALIS cost him the season title, giving Viper 163 the LYC Championship over Ghost Panda, with Vicious Panda in third.  Congrats to 163.  On the WLIS Championship Circuit end, 163 and Ghost Panda tied for first, and each won 1 of the 6 events, but 163 had more 2nd place finishes and takes the WLIS title, with Justin Scott's Mambo Kings from Noroton YC in third.  No word on the Noroton YC season championship scores.

LYC and WLIS circuit results are attached.  11 Larchmont Vipers qualified for the LYC championship (which will also put the season champion in the running for the overall WLIS One Design title vs. all other fleets) - it's the most qualifiers we've ever had.  15 teams qualified for the WLIS Championship Circuit and 27 area teams sailed at least one regatta.

Looking ahead for those who want to make a 2017 calendar:

1. There will be some version of a WLIS scheduling meeting this winter.  I'd be more interested in hearing from people via email first as to whether they have any preference for how we do things locally, what races should be scored, etc.  Some proposals that have been tossed around:

1. Starting our season at AYC Spring Series in late April / early May.  Might just be a single weekend instead of both.  AYC has invited the Vipers to compete on the same circle as the 105s, slower PHRF boats and 70s.
2. Adding a circuit event at Nyack Boat Club.  They have 3 Vipers, could have more soon, and have been good about traveling to our stuff.
3. Focusing only on the 2-day events and using the YRA Saturdays as practice
4. Breaking off from the YRA stuff and doing something like the AYC 70s/K6s where we have our own course on a Saturday or Sunday with shorter courses (0.4 nm legs) and more races (4-6 races per day).
5. Getting a Noroton/Stamford calendar together earlier and advertising it to all.  Note that Viper sailor Brendan Larrabee is now the Sailing Director at Stamford YC for 2017 - congratulations to Brendan.

A lot of options on the table.  If you feel strongly about one of them, let me know - maybe we just create a scheduling subcommittee of people who care the most and let them hash it out.
