2012 Larchmont schedule / WLIS Championship
« on: March 01, 2012, 08:28:59 PM »
FYI, we're close to finalizing the YRALIS One Design Sailing Instructions for the western half of the Sound (NY), and I decided to create a Viper addendum to clarify and modify a few things specific to the Larchmont Viper fleet.  Once both docs are in final form, they'll be posted on the LYC website.

The main highlights for other area Vipers are that:

1. We're encouraging Larchmont Vipers to sail in the two other "main" WLIS Viper regattas by counting Indian Harbor's YRALIS Champs and Stamford's Viper Open toward our season championship score -- we've also talked about using those two events plus LYC Memorial Day as a "Western Long Island Sound Viper Championship Series" (count 2 of your best 3 regattas);

2. We're saying that anyone is eligible for the YRA end of season Viper fleet trophies, even if you're not from Larchmont -- as long as you qualify by getting in enough races and have paid your $50 dues to the YRALIS, you can be on the podium at the end of the season.  If you just do the open regattas like LYC Memorial Day, AYC Independence Day, LYC Race Week, YRALIS Champs, SYC Viper Open and the HPDO, you'll have more than enough days to qualify, and there may be opportunities to get other people to LYC for plain vanilla Saturdays on a limited basis depending on storage and what is happening at LYC any given week or two (i.e., the Saturday after Memorial Day for people who wanted to leave boats for an extra week, or the Saturday or two before HPDO, etc.).

Obviously other fleets can do what they want with their own local racing -- the addendum is just meant to be a guideline for the Larchmont folks, but we're trying to get everyone else involved, and hope that it will create more participation in the WLIS NY/CT/NJ area Viper fleet.  By my math, we now have 26 Vipers in the tri-state area (10 Larchmont, 11 Western CT, 5 misc. NY/NJ), which doesn't count the eastern CT boats or folks from Marblehead who live in Greenwich, so there's a chance to get some large turnouts at the local regattas.  Looking forward to a great 2012 season.

The fleet rules and 2012 schedule for the Larchmont Viper fleet is posted at http://www.larchmontyc.org/racing/documents/2012LYCViperlocalfleetrules.pdf -- as mentioned previously, anyone who pays YRA dues can race and be eligible for the end-of-the-year YRA trophies.

There is also a WLIS Viper circuit that consists of 3 regattas:
1. Larchmont Memorial Day May 26-27
2. YRALIS Champs @ Indian Harbor YC Aug. 4-5
3. Stamford One Design Invitational Aug. 25-26

Score is best two out of three overall, if you sail all three, drop your worst score, tiebreaker at the final event in Stamford on who beats who, with some trophy to be determined to be given to the overall winners (probably beer, maybe rum).

We've already gotten out there for a couple of practice days in late March at LYC to get ready for Charleston and have 5 boats sailing this Saturday, 7 boats sailing on the 15th.  Good times.

There is a nice quiet season in the Viper circuit in the month of June - which I actually rather appreciate so one can enjoy some loval club level racing.

So if a boat wanted to hang out for the month of June and do some local WLIS racing, what is the best way to do this?

Not really an option.  Best case scenario is post Memorial Day maybe someone can hang out for an extra week if they talk to us in advance, but otherwise, there would need to be some sort of separate storage option, which we can't work out at LYC.  If someone finds another way to show up for the racing, they are more than welcome to participate.  We are trying to figure out what some of those options might be, but it takes a lot of creativity.

Spoke to Old Greenwich YC yesterday. They may be able to accomodate some Vipers at a very reasonable rate if they want to participate in the Captain's Harbor/Stamford YC  Viper racing. Is there a schedule available for this fleet?   Jonathan? Charles?

As a note, one long term option for people who in WLIS NY who would like to brainstorm creative solutions for getting a Viper but not joining one of the area yacht clubs would be to work with a local marina (probably in Mamaroneck Harbor) to have a 1-ton hoist installed and having drysail storage there during the summer.  It's a pretty short sail from there to the typical YRA racecourse, and the racing is open to everyone regardless of club affiliation or lack thereof -- you just need to pay the YRA dues.  So if there were 3-4 people who wanted to make the initial investment to purchase a hoist and have it installed at a friendly marina (a couple do exist), I bet this could be an option, and you just need to figure out how to get reimbursed over time from the yard for the hoist (i.e., agreeing to donate the hoist after x number of years in exchange for reduced storage bills during the summer, or charging newcomers to the fleet x for hoist usage, etc.).

I haven't seen a Greenwich/Stamford local race schedule yet, but there are at minimum two Viper regattas there in August (Aug. 4-5 YRALIS Champs, and Aug. 25-26 Stamford Open).

Status update on 2012 season: 16 WLIS Vipers have participated in at least one race, 8 have sailed at least 50% of the races so far to qualify (15 out of 29 races), and another 6 have sailed a third of the races.  Season standings to date attached.

Final WLIS championship circuit standings attached -- this is just for the circuit, not the overall season scores, which end with the 2012 HPDO in a few weeks.

Final WLIS season standings attached.  49 races in total, 25 (50%+) needed to qualify.  9 boats qualified, 2 others were really close.  For the record, you could have qualified by sailing only three weekends: YRALIS Champs, the Stamford Viper Regatta, and the HPDO (26 of the 49 races).  Adding two more weekends (Larchmont Memorial Day and Larchmont Race Week) would have gotten you to 33 of the 49 races and given you 4 throwout races to boot.  We can talk about whether this system works for everyone during the offseason.  Despite the fact that many individual days were held off LYC (which were open to all, and several folks took advantage by coming in for extra days to race with us), a Noroton YC boat won the title -- congratulations to Joe Healey and crew.  The LYC season championship was won by Jay Rhame, who edged out myself and Dave Owen for the title by a very slim margin -- 3 points in any one race in the HPDO.  Final season standings attached.  The YRALIS will do awards in early December at their annual awards ceremony at LYC.
